I hate elves so much. So much. But thanks to Stan, you can hear me talk about how to use them as monsters in your games. Also: some cryptic late Anglo-Saxon magical charms!

Great episode! I always love the historical stuff, like the Anglo-Saxon charm vs. elf-shot. I’ve been re-reading The Silmarillion lately, so thinking a lot about elves. For those looking for a Tolkienian elf who complicates the “dignified and benevolent” stereotype, Fëanor is a perfect example. He’s arrogant to the point of hubris (with some justification since he did create the Silmarils and invent writing, among other accomplishments, but the point is that he’s a jerk about it); he dominates his people while convincing many of them that he’s actually leading them to freedom; he betrays his allies because he’s paranoid that they will betray him; he’s reckless and single-minded in his pursuit of vengeance. Basically he embodies all of the bad qualities you talk about in this episode. An elf modeled after Fëanor would probably make an interesting NPC, as a less-than-ideal ally or even a villainous mastermind. If the PC’s happened to steal his blue jewel, they better watch out!

Elves, with their easily manageable hair and superior ways, pah!
