Our first episode chosen by a $5 Patron focuses on the Owlbear. Thanks to Jason Walter for choosing the topic!

One of my faves too. They were a feature encounterin my Owl Hoot Trail campaign. In the first episode one of the PC's dogs ran off into the woods and came back, chased by an Owlbear, far too fearsome for level 1 characters but a lucky shot took of half its beak and the successfully ran retreated, that is ran away. Many adventures and levels later they were in the same woods when they encounter another, younger, owlbear. They were just getting on top of it when was a fearful Grrrhoot! and their owlbear nemesis, mother to the younger one, jumped in, Hulk style and laid about the party. Its call attracts other animals and so it grabbed the wolves that turned up and flung them, as snarling missiles, at the Gadgeteer. Again they ran away.

I feel like the owlbear fits into that western setting really well -- like the jackalope. It's a "tall tale" kind of monster, the kind of thing you can imagine grizzled old cowpokes trying to convince the greenhorns actually does exist.

This was a very satisfying episode. I, too, love the Owlbear, and I want to thank Jason for requesting it. :)
