Trying (and Largely Failing) to Make a Top 10 NES Games List | Knockback, Episode 279

For this week's KnockBack, we thought we'd do something a little bit different. A major fuel source for the origins of our podcast back in 2018 was our shared love of the NES: The hardware, its games, and the community that's long surrounded it. So we thought we'd delve back into that subject matter by each constructing a Top 10 NES Games list and then trying to fuse them together, a task we almost immediately abandoned when we realized we approached our respective lists quite differently. Thus, what emerges is a robust talk about many of the games from our respective childhoods, and how we still grapple with their undeniable greatness to this day.

Mega Man was a very important game for me. I first crossed path with it, when I went to my cousin's house and he wasn't there while my mom was visiting my aunt. So, I played NES and he had Mega Man inside the console. I played Gustman stage 1st. Jeez I didn't make it to the 3rd platform. I chose Fireman and I was in love with that stage, it is simply incredible. I did remember that after that, I told my neighbor about the game and the story of how I played it and he asked his mom to buy and he got it. And we played the shit out of it. We had an odd experience becase his game came without the manual and it took us time to figure out that we could use the powers once we defeated the Robot Masters. We for some reason would pause the game with select button because we didn't know "why you would pause the game just to see the life count?" we thought. Until I accidentally paused with start , after having defeated Fireman, and accidentally pressed the arrows and after releasing pause. I was like: "what happened to Mega Man?" seeing the color change. and then I fired and ... I was hooked when I knew you'd get powers every time you defeated the Robot Master. I guess that's why they added that weapon acquired section in 2 after you defeat a Robot Master. Keep the amazing work, I could never pick just 10 NES games. I'm really impressed non of you included sports or racing games, hence why I can never make one. Games like Baseball Stars seem very irresponsible to ignore. Double Dribble, Super Spike Vball, Skate or Die 2? I don't know guys this is ver hard to do. Astyanax? Gi Joe? You did mention the beat em ups but RCR and may be Double Dragon 2 should be there. Blades of Steel or even Ice Hockey? It's too hard for me guys, but props to you for even trying.

Something along the lines of SMB3, Zelda, Adventures of Lolo, Arkanoid, Tetris, Ninja Gaiden, CV3, Mega Man 3, Little Nemo, and maybe Super C would be my list.

Mine: 1. Dragon Warrior 3 (with DW4 as a second that I'm leaving off. The Job system is great in this one.) 2. Zelda 1 (with Zelda 2 as a third that I'm leaving off) 3. Crystalis (The best lesser known game on the system.) 4. Final Fantasy. 5. Super Mario 3. 6. Megaman 3. 7. Contra. 8. Battle of Olympus (Another good lesser known game.) 9. Solar Jetman: Hunt for the Golden Warship (all great, except the last boss which sucks.) 10. Legacy of the Wizard. (The 4th Dragon Slayer game, distant ancestor of the Trails series.) HM: Dr Mario, Tecmo Bowl, Chip n Dale: Rescue Rangers. Best games we didn't get: Moon Crystal, Earthbound 0, and Megami Tensei 1/2.
