Just a mere week after our last Defining Duke Ultimate featuring Chris Ray Gun and Ains of Seasoned Gaming, we're (mostly) back to gather around the Halo campfire for a bit of a chat on the latest development. As I'm sure many of you have already heard, Bonnie Ross who helped found 343 Industries 15 years ago and has served as studio head since, has departed from the company. With that comes a shake-up in the leadership over at 343 and huge ramifications for the future of Xbox's current flagship IP. Together, Chris, Cog, and I (Matty) will sit down yet again to discuss what is to come for this beloved franchise that so many people want to see a win from.

Note: Due to the upcoming State of Play, we've rearranged Sacred Symbols+ and Defining Duke Ultimate to accommodate.

Have you guys ever noticed that Bonnie Ross and Kathleen Kennedy have never been in the same place at the same time?

I’m glad that it seems like people are ditching the rose-tinted glasses and coming to the realization that the Halo Infinite campaign sucked butts. I’m hoping that this 343 shakeup will result in better Halo games, but I’m not getting my hopes up.

So I've played every halo game with my brother. Infinite drops & i still haven't played trying to wait on co-op campaign. Now i hear they aren't even going to bring it to infinite so i guess i will miss this one.

No one is coming to that realisation halo infinite’s campaign was sucked butts. Halo infinite was great One of the most fun playing experiences in halo easily better then every halo except halo 3. The story might not be as good as halo2 and reach for me but that gameplay loop is way better then the both of them any day and your crazy to think otherwise.

co-op campaign is coming in November just not split screen. It is shame for those that miss those split screen days personally I don’t care I rather buy another console and monitor and set my friends or family beside me or just play with my friends online which is the way I play now a days.

Hey dukes and the arbiter of halo This was a great DDU but I feel sad Ains couldn’t come back as well. 3 things I want to talk about. 1. I absolutely agree we need to see more characters in this universe but sadly I’m pretty sure the didact died off screen. It would be awesome to see blue team, fireteam Osiris and arbiter. 2. They got to add more modes and one of the main modes they need is infection mode especially since they got perfect abilities for the infected and non-infected. infected get the grappling hook and non-infected get the repulsor this will hands down be one of the most played modes mark my words. as soon as they add the arbiter dlc they got to add playable elites which only makes sense for monetisation and hopefully we eventually eventually get playable brutes as well maybe a Atriox dlc. 3. No one is going to make halo feel like halo other then 343. people asking for ID software to make halo. now they will definitely make a great game but their stories are like what that doom dev said a long time ago, I don’t want to quote what he said but you get the idea and halo needs a good story with fantastic gameplay which 343 nailed that part and majority of people at the time thought they did as well. People just wanted more and 343 couldn’t deliver on the live service game parts. People also want a COD dev to take over but I’m sorry have you all gone whack like a big thing that even Chris has said about why halo 4 didn’t do well was because it felt like the closest we got to cod like gameplay and halo 4 multiplayer is regarded to most as the worst yet the story was good with a mistake of making the elites look like they just ate a brute. If you want to take Raven software away from cod and make a spin off of halo along the lines of singularity I am down for that. Have a great day boys

This might be my favorite podcast episode ever, with Chris on it. That man fucking loves halo

I really wish they would make a game that was about Red team just not halo wars . They have so many story’s to tell that would be worth visiting. It’s a shame they sit on all these good characters and stories

I don't remember when it happened, but Joseph Staten was moved up to "head of creative" at 343. He's exactly where we need him.

As a long time Halo fan, I played competitively at MLG events, level 50 in Halo 3, Champion level in Halo 5 and around 2100 Onyx in Halo Infinite. I love Halo, and logged literally 1000s of hours. I hate Infinite. Not because it's a bad game, I love the way it feels, it's like a sequel to Halo 3 (the best Halo). I turned it off in February when they explained how the ranking system worked. It's a horrible design decision and makes Halo Infinite a miserable experience. The game is designed to ensure you only win 50% of your games. At higher levels this creates wild imbalances and a majority of my hardcore friends quit over this reason. Plus the netcode is beyond frustrating getting shot around walls, and high Onyx is riddled with cheaters. Without the ranking logic change I'll never return to Infinite regardless of the content they put out. I played on only like 5 maps in Halo 3 for years. (Battle Royale would get me back though)

I don’t know what’s crazier: you guys possibly brewing this into existence, or being able to talk about it for over an hour. 😄

I wonder if we will ever get Bonnies' side of the story, no PR speak, just a truthful account on the missteps and what the thought process was behind those decisions.
