This generation is well underway, and it's official: Sony's PlayStation 5 is 'winning' by a lot. At 10 million units sold and counting, PS5 is the fastest-selling home console ever and a testament to a clearly well-oiled corporation that launched hardware in a supply-constrained, virus-infected environment. We discuss what this huge figure (and accompanying software data) means, and whether Sony should start getting comfortable as the Big Dog yet again. Plus: A new PS5 firmware update is about to fix many of our most glaring UI issues, Mortal Kombat is now the best-selling fighting franchise of all-time, ex-PlayStation CEO Shawn Layden is still very worried about the cost of making games, new PS+ games are on the horizon, and much more. Then: Has a game's controls been so bad that you've refused to play it? Is the Valve Deck about to change everything? Are we underestimating the appeal of XDefiant? Will Colin ever update his LinkedIn profile?

Video version will be up soon!

Happy Friday everyone. Let's go

Props to whoever came up with that thumbnail!

Captain Canada

Just want to say that the awesome timestamps are one of many quality of life things this podcast does that most others do not, and I appreciate you guys for it!

MostlyCharlie

I’m 38 and I just learned what “clapping cheeks” means. Thank you LSM for helping me stay young and relevant.

Big titty drinker

While delays are annoying I would rather them take as much time as they need. No one wants a cyberpunk situation. Gamers gotta make up thier minds cant complain about delays then turn around and whine when games come out that are not done. Pick a fucking lane or shut up. Lol

Jesse spivey

I didn’t know dying light had multiplayer! I was looking at it since it’s on sale & I’ve been hearing it on the show! I wonder how’s the platinum?

lazer_josh

This thumbnail 😂😂

Tanner Lange

To the guy who's kid is clapping checks in Fortnite you can filter language in the settings in the tab to the way right

Kenneth Oms

The thumbnails just keep getting better and better lol

Jeremy Seal

Sir Colin, King of the Americas.

MJ SKA BOI

Naughty Dog is the only good studio name tbh.

Stephen Forgione

Listening to this while I play the halo flight! Have a great weekend boys

Big titty drinker

Btw chris had bars this episode. Usually we disagree but he was on point and hilarious the entire episode, thoroughly entertaining!

Cody Richter

I'm really excited to check out Tom Clancy's *Fart Noise*! Game of the year title for sure!

I was watching the Olympics and tuned into this crazy Table Tennis match between China and Chinese Taipei... my first thought was, "WTF is Chinese Taipei??" Found out it's what John Cena should've called Taiwan. XD

James Good

If you are skilled enough to make a game in Dreams that is worth playing, you are better off making an actual game in unity or unreal. Chris is correct. Dreams came out ten years too late.

David Kramme

I adored Plague Tale but watched the last chapter and epilogue on YouTube, basically changes and puts its weakest systems front and center, everything up till then was incredible imo, take care guys.

MJ SKA BOI

Meant to come back and say Insomniac is actually a great name too

MJ SKA BOI

One more thing, sorry for multi-commenting. 10/10 take on scalpers vs sales numbers Colin, there aren't enough content creators going to bat against that tired argument. That bit is worth clipping for a standalone video imo.

Dick McFarmhouse

Thanks for reading my question! No word on Demon’s Souls huh? That’s not a good sign. I hope there is some other reason behind it not being mentioned other than soft sales. It was my personal favorite of the soulslike games next to Bloodborne.

Brandon Soto

Personally, I’m not looking forward to Tom Clancy’s Black Ops Cold War: ReMARStered

PapaFlow

To speak to Chris’s story he brought up of the lady getting bullied/ridiculed on stage. It’s come to light some of the prominent figures most close to blizzard products, such as Asmongold for example (WOW streamer) have a long history of giving feedback that Blizzard doesn’t talk nice to their fans. To a degree to which that is sorta unique to blizzard. Sounds strange because it is strange. But apparently there does seem to be some sorta culture at the company that shits on the people who play their games

TROTMAC96

"Twilight princess was not good" Come again, Colin?

Anonymous

Personally I been enjoying the teases and build up. Will it payoff who knows but, people like trying to figure this stuff out it’s fun. I don’t know if anyone has said this but my theory is Blue Box is Blue Point Studios, it would explain the Silent Hill/Metal Gear remake rumours and I think blue point had some cryptic tweets awhile back teasing stuff. Either way just have fun guys and try not to stress 😊

Kaleb

HOLD UP. I just got deep enough in the podcast that Colin said Twilight Princess wasn't very good.... the fuck? If it wasn't at the end of the podcast I mightve stopped listening. Probably the worst take I've ever heard on SS even taking into account things Colin got factually wrong. I wasn't sure what to do or who to call after having my ears violated like that.

Cole Minder

You gotta be stoned Colin, Minish Cap was great

Bogey Zero

Just to give you some perspective on why someone would want a bunch of games installed at once. I have a daughter who loves to play a lot of the same games I do. So once I’m done I still have to let her slowly make her way through them. I also have a few nephews that come over a lot and they have a rotation of multiplayer games they play together . I also enjoy an occasional match in Call of Duty, which infamously takes up a large amount of space. That coupled with slow internet speeds, it’s easier for me to just keep all the games installed.

LastStandMedia

I seem to remember the opposite, too. Wasn't a clip going around of a guy ridiculing Blizzard at Blizzcon and people circulated it as what not to do?

Bogey Zero

I don’t know I’d argue that sharing your console with people in the house that play and like different games necessitating multiple installed games at once is pretty common.

Brian Comstock

So I have something to say. In one of your previous episodes you say that people have been complaining about how their inquiries aren’t getting read. Now, I understand with the amount of inquiries you get and I do know it’s impossible to get to every single comment. BUT, you tend to use the same people who leave comments over and over again and I can see how that would intensify people’s complaints. For example, I hear a turd Ferguson inquiry what seems like every other episode. And I can see how people who want their comments read get frustrated by hearing the same people getting their comments read. I’m not saying you don’t read new patrons inquiries either tho. All I’m saying is there is a select “elite” few that get their posts read ALOT. Anyways, I’m not one to complain. But I had to offer some criticism. It’s impossible to run a perfect show, but I love the content you guys put out. I just had to share my view.

Mark Horner

Colin, I'm interested in Tribes of Midgard but a little hesitant because it seems to focus a lot on multi-player co-op. The whole "10 players forming a tribe" is turning me off knowing I'd have a hard time getting ANY of my friends to also get this game. I'm looking forward to hearing you hopefully talk about this game when you play it. Particularly the single-player aspect.

Alexander Dean

Mortal Kombat is so clearly at the top of the fighting games zeitgeist. I can’t fathom how you guys think otherwise.

NeO JD

Col, what do you think about Miami’s potential for a gaming studio? Too pricey a location?

NeO JD

To Col’s defense, I kinda get a read for how he picks the questions, and those names you hear often (like Turd) just seem to write their questions better than others. Maybe having a memorable name helps too, but being relevant, and grammatically easy to read go a long way.

Dave Ramos

Another reason why I love this company: I can post a question on Patreon and get an answer, and sometimes then put Colin into a "mind-cycle" lol. Seriously, was cool to hear an extended answer to my question, "What if Tencent bought Patreon?". PS. I have this secret goal of getting at least one question read in each segment of Sacred Symbols at least once. So I'm counting that as sorta making it into the 6 questions at the end lol.

LastStandMedia

I don't see it from my perch, but it doesn't mean I'm informed. In the PlayStation space, there's no doubt that the more hardcore games garner more attention in places I'd see coverage.

LastStandMedia

I think Miami is a great spot. People want to live there. You can attract people there. There's also some game dev talent already in Florida. Great for taxes, both personal and corporate. Dangerous, though, as Miami's future is uncertain, I think. Could look a bit like Venice in the next 100 years.

Joe McPartlin

Q: Why do so many people feel that the PS5 SSD is so small? A: Call of Duty I play Warzone and CoD multiplayer (Modern Warfare) pretty often with my online friend group. Having both of those installed along with updates takes up more than 1/3 of the drive. I sometimes have to delete a game just for a CoD update to be able to download and install. That's with only two of the modes from MW installed, and Black Ops Cold War is even more of a hassle with space. If you play CoD consistently enough to keep it installed but also cycle through other games regularly then the onboard SSD space feels microscopic.

Douglas Morreale

🤞 for a world with no more Abandoned/ButtBox speculation.

Greg McDonald

It's pronounced Pwa-row

Simon Pusateri

I can’t stop staring at Chris’s face on the photoshop… Dustin you have outdone yourself this time

Kingstons Grandma

Got in on the Halo Infinite beta. Was kicked before any multiplayer map could load "due to inactivity". Guess I didn't really lose anything, but was very disappointing.

MISZCZOGRZMOT

Hey guys. Hate to be a broken record, but the poor performance of PS5 titles is probably due to the $100 game prices in regions outside of US. I owned a PS5 since launch, and I still haven't bought a single new PS5 game yet - it's all PS+, deals, PS5 upgrades, and my backlog, for me. I'll buy those games once they go down in price a bit more (unless Morales still keeps the previous Spiderman's PS5 ugrade gated behind its ultimate edition, then f that particular game). I used to buy 2-3 new games a month in the PS3 era, when they were actually $60 here, once PS4 games became $85 in EU, I'd still buy ~6 new games a year (combined with PS+, and sales), but $100 for a base edition of a PS5 game is just absurd.

Wayde

I have to disagree with games with gold at least recently. some of the old school 360 or xbox games that are put on there for free are amazing like conkers bad fur day and crimson skies both are amazing 360 games

Wayde

I'm sorry I have to highly disagree. Game should be that price the price of gas has tripled in the same time that we last saw a price increase for video games there isn't an item on the current market that you can get for cheaper or the equivalent price you could have 15 years ago. It might be a sticker shock to you but it isn't wrong. It is in line with what people make now and what things are worth. Do you truly expect a product to remain stagnant in price for your entire lifetime

MISZCZOGRZMOT

@Wayde Funny you mention gas, cause I can have 2 full tanks of gas for $100, or a tank of gas and groceries for a week (or more), and this lessens the value of a non-essential piece of entertainment even more. The price hike alone is not the issue. Would you pay $100 for 1 ordinary movie ticket? No, that's way too much - $50, then? Still too much. And I'm not comparing the two, I'm just saying that there's a ceiling to pricing. Whether they wanted to, or not, they have clearly reached the peak price point that people are willing to pay for non-essential things like video games, and the soft sales seem to reflect that. The fact that there's a 25% price disparity between markets is just icing on the cake.

The Eclectic Gamer

Just started Trigger Witch with my son (confetti mode enabled lol) and am really enjoying it. Solid, entertaining stuff

Colin, Hearing you describe Belgium and France as “pretty much the same country”, while discussing Hercule Poirot, triggered me more than anything else I’ve ever heard you say. And I’ve been a fan since the early Beyond days. It’s a common misconception in a lot of countries that all Belgians are native French speakers. In the northern part of Belgium we speak Dutch and in the south French is the first language. Actually, about 60 percent is Dutch speaking. Culturally, the French speaking Belgians (Walloons) are quite close to the French, however the same cannot be said for the Dutch speaking Belgians (Flemish) and our Dutch counterparts. There’s quite a rivalry there, probably stemming from the Belgian revolution in 1830, where we finally got our independence from the Netherlands. Not dissimilar to the relationship between the US and the British. Probably not interesting at all to any of you, but just wanted to defend my definitely not French honor.

LastStandMedia

I think game price comparisons have to be relative to your geographic location, and the history of pricing there. Comparing foreign pricing to American pricing is useless unless there's that extra point of comparison.

Anonymous

I know, I know. My intro was also meant to be a joke, but probably should have added a smiley :) Just thought you might find this random info about my small country interesting. Now that I have your attention, just want to let you know I’ve been a fan for years and joined the Patreon a couple of months ago. You’re the most sincere voice in the gaming industry and I really appreciate how in-depth you go in your analysis of the news. You’ve set up a great team and love the content. It hurts and frustrates me when I see how you get treated online. I know my 5 bucks is but a small drop in the incredible success of your Patreon, but wanted to support you and everybody at LSM. Voting with my wallet, I guess :)

MISZCZOGRZMOT

All the comparisons aside, I'm just saying that soft sales all around, while PS5 sales keep breaking records can only mean two things, I think - people are either holding out for the games to go down in price on sales (since they're too expensive), or that covid has wrecked the economy too much, and that consumer spending is way down (though I don't think that's the case anymore). What else could be the issue here? All the games just happened to be niche/difficult titles? I know I'm waiting for the price drops myself, and there's probably more people like me out there.

Raymond Wallman

He’ll throw it of course, The corpse of the horse. Cause nobody can lift A horse’s corpse. Unless of course That horse’s corpse Is thrown by THE AMAZING COLIN M!

Robert

Okay I'm a week late but I had to chime in on the Zelda comments... I understand disliking Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks.. but MINISH CAP?? Colin.. Minish Cap is one of THE best traditional style Zelda games and it wasn't even made by Nintendo. Anyway, great show as always :) (despite the horrific comments on Zelda xD)

Raymond Wallman

For context, I was inspired by the part of the episode where you guys are talking about the fish with human teeth. You said you’d “beat that dead horse and throw it into the ocean” or something to that effect. Once I heard that I immediately thought of that little ditty set to the Mr. Ed theme.
