Sony recently announced updated sales figures for PlayStation VR -- 3 million and counting -- which raises an interesting question: Is that actually good? After all, only one in 27 PS4s sold have a PSVR unit hooked up to it. We discuss what that means. Meanwhile, there's news galore to cover, including DICE's long-abandoned Genesis game coming to PS4 and Vita, Until Dawn developer Supermassive's all-new IP trademark, the cancellation of Bloodstained on Vita, Bethesda's aggressive attitude towards Sony, and much more. Colin also gives a preview of Dragon Quest XI, the boys discuss the newly-released Metroidvania Guacamelee! 2, and we round things out, as always, with your questions. Oh, and there's a debate about the pronunciation of "GIF" as well.

Bro, I was crouched down on the floor in nothing but my underwear not... 9 hours ago playing Playstation VR.

Gabriel Garcia

The new Housemarque game trailer for Stormdivers was just revealed and it looks like a battle Royale. The YouTube kids don't seem to happy about it but while I'm not exactly keen on that genre (based on the sample size of 1 game that I've played which was Fortnite) I'm still excited to try it just because it's Housemarque. Thoughts?

Dillon DuMais

the biggest problem with Chris spoiling that boss fight is that he spoiled it WHILE complaining about having that exact thing spoiled for him lol

CTE

Starfox 2? As an example of a game that was shelved forever?

Joey Finelli

Peter Pan PB is delicious

Fred Bence

I didn't even notice anything spoiled hahaha also, I wonder if Peter Pan PB is an east coast thing. Is Chris from LA or out east? It's pretty common on shelves in PA

Anonymous

MTGA! The podcast really is great. Peter Pan PB was the shit. Maybe it still is .. I don't even know.

Tyson Williams

I haven’t heard the argument Chris made for GIF that’s interesting, too interesting

Marcus Brown

I'm very excited for Hitman 2. Agent 47 is my favorite video game character. Stealth is my favorite genre, and I was devastated that Ubisoft didn't announce a new Spilnter Cell game. It's hilarious you actually bought Metal Gear Survive. I am highly looking forward to you reviewing that some time in the year 2030 lol. Love ya, and the show.

Hose A Contra Razz

i wasn't going to be that Guy about the spiderman spoiler, but i was like oh man he's the first boss fight cool.

Gabriel Garcia

I actually play A LOT of Elder Scrolls Legends. I prefer it to Hearthstone and Gwent and all the other card games out there because of its gameplay, and because I prefer the ES lore a lot more and the game does a decent job of encapsulating the ES lore into the cards. Anyway, despite my love for Legends, optically speaking Legends is going through a rough patch. For one, Legends is switching developers. Direwolf Digital made the game, but now Sparky Pants Studio is rebuilding the game from the ground up since they're switching developers. The reasoning is because they want to give it a major graphical overhaul, and from the previews it looks promising. Also, I doubt that the card game is doing as well as like Hearthstone. Either way, Bethesda seems invested in the game by the simple fact they don't want to give up on it. However, I'd go onto say that putting it on consoles might be the key to survival for this game, and despite them looking aggressive toward Sony about the cross platform progression being a necessity (which I absolutely agree is a necessity) they are only being aggressive about it because they actually need this to secure a greater chance of survivability for this game.

Chris B

Chris is wrong on gif. If it’s bc of the acronym, then why is jpeg not said as jfeg?

Zack E

I’m afraid this is a mistake by Housemarque. How do you expect to compete in the BR landscape when Fortnite, PubG, Battlefield, Call of Duty will be all competing for a slice of that pie? I sure hope it does well, I do love Housemarque and their games. Not saying it’ll be a poorly made game, just seems like it’ll have trouble competing. Hopefully there’s something in this game that resembles a Housemarque game, because there really wasn’t anything in that gameplay trailer.

Thank you for subscribing! I appreciate it.

The Viking vita funeral needs to be a thing !!!

Korey Burns

Isn't "flipping a switch" exactly what happened in the past? I thought there was a game that accidentally turned on cross play for a weekend?

Ian (616Entertainment)

Duuuuude the Chris-centric exclusive episode is going to be fucking awesome, can't wait for that. Are monthly SS exclusives a thing to expect going forward? (Please say yes, you beautiful fucking bastard)

Jonathan Broussard

I bought the Limited Edition Severed Release. It is going to stay sealed as I already have the plat for it.

LastStandMedia

No. I'll swap Sacred Symbols in every few months for the exclusive, as I've done in the past with Fireside Chats and KnockBack!

Amazing podcast per usual. Thanks for making Tuesdays great again! However, I was disappointed that no babies were sacrificed during this episode. Maybe sacrifice several next week. Just a suggestion of course. Keep being the fucking best y'all

Thanks for the response Colin & Chris, I totally didn't know FFIX was on PS4 I thought it was only on Vita as psx classic. Downloading now..

Edwin Garcia

Ps VR is actually the market leader , I don’t think it would make sense for Sony to use another VR

Zack E

There should be a new segment in the show: Compare the sales data of a game, individual entry or the entire franchise, to Grand Theft Auto V’s sales.

My fiancé bought me PSVR for my 30th birthday. Big price tag for us peasants. She’s now consistently angry at me for never playing it. She takes the dust collection personally. So I’m really hoping PS5 is backwards compatible with it for my sake...

Anthony Stewart

Lmao the gigadi after Crystal Balls was awesome

Jayce Tamulevich

I spent countless hours in the level editor of Time Splitters Future Perfect and have hoped for a new game in the series for years. If they do this right it could be something great.

Hey, just a quick comment about Sekiro releasing in March 2019: Dark Souls II NA release date: March 11, 2014 Bloodborne NA release date: March 24, 2015 Dark Souls III WW release date: April 12, 2016 (March 24th again in JP) So this is not at all unusual, in fact early spring is like Christmas for From Software fans ;)

Peter Pan Peanut Butter - Extra crunchy #1

Matthew Perry

Hey Colin , thanks for reading my question on the supermassive games new IP "shattered state " had a lot of fun listening to this episode as a lot of the content I was super interested in :-) I'm off on my holidays this week and have my hands on a switch and my ps vita and just wondering if you could recommend a game for either of these handhelds that would keep me gaming whilst I'm away ?? Have already played Uncharted golden abyss on the vita and mario cart on the switch so any suggestion other than these would be much appreciated :-)

Tyson Williams

The closest thing I can think of to this DICE game is Starfox 2

Owen

Dudes never heard of peter pan peanut butter? First question on patreon exclusive episode - "What the fuck Chris?" ;)

Owen

I'm pretty sure PSVR is outselling Vive and Oculus. Vive and oculus are superior hardware, but that price point man. PSVR is actually affordable.

Hey guys! On the topic of Sony being forced to add the touch pad to a dual shock 5 controller. Have you seen the mini Hori controller for ps4 aimed at kids? I have one for my daughter, it does have a touch pad "button" but no touch pad. And it is officially licensed. So maybe they actually would axe the pad. Great episode, love Peter Pan peanut butter :D https://blog.us.playstation.com/2017/10/18/introducing-the-mini-wired-gamepad-for-ps4/

Great episode guys!

God of War and RDR2 were mentioned on the GOTY question... Celeste is my favorite game of the year so far. We'll see what Spiderman and RDR2 have to say about that. \

LastStandMedia

That's an interesting point, BUT! The afterglow of what comes out in February and March isn't going to be kind to the game, I don't think. We shall see.

LastStandMedia

I'm hearing great things about Hollow Knight on Switch. Can't vouch for it personally (it doesn't come to PS4 until 2019), but it's supposed to be awesome...

LastStandMedia

I'd be interested how this controller works with touch pad-enabled games... particularly that first wave from '13 and '14.

Lucas Gremista

9/10 - Amazing + Great podcast + Great hosts + Great content - Lack of baby sacrifices - Too much water

Cole Britt

Thanks for reading my No Mans Sky questions! It seems they’re doing fine now since the launch of NEXT, but man would it be exciting to see them go the route of licensing their tech/team to implement it in other games!

hugplx

Hah. Can't wait for GOTY so Chris can prove you wrong about GoW vs Detroit with science like he promised :p

TheBufferPiece

You should tell Chris that the whole g in gif stands for graphics so it should sound the same doesn't stand up because the 's' in laser stands for stimulated yet people don't pronounce laser like "lacer" even though stimulated doesn't have the 'z' sound (also the creator said that the pronunciation of gif was based off the Jif peanut butter)

Alec Shaner

I hold very few things sacred in my life, and one of them is Jif! Screw that Peter Pan or Skippy crap :)

Alex Gates

As a kid, I always wanted to like Peter Pan peanut butter for obvious reasons, however, ever time I tried it I hated it... Haha.

crispyn64

I'm excited about the next episode being dedicated to getting to know Chris, but I feel there's only so much we can learn from an onslaught of fuck-marry-kill questions.

Jessica Gutiérrez

Steve Wilhite was trolling when he said it was pronounced "Jif", nobody working on the format with him ever pronounced it jif, he never pronounced it jif, he was playing the devils advocate when attempting to troll 99% of the world that pronounces is "gif". It wouldn't matter anyway as nobody up until the mid 2000's - 2010 ever uttered the file extension acronym as it didn't exist until people started referring to "animated gif's", so he isn't even a part of how to pronounce the acronym as it didn't have a pronunciation when he created it, people were always referring to images as "jpegs" even when they were in gif format, as a long time photoshop poster on 3dcommune, renderosity, and deviantart I saw for years people call even adobe, 3dStudio Max, Paintshop Pro, gimp, etc filetypes as jpegs as it was the most commonly used even if they were in gif format. Steve doesn't get a say, its not the rest of the worlds fault that he's an idiot, by the way "gif" is an atrocious file extension anyway. You however Colin, you can pronounce it anyway you want lol, its not a big deal anyway.

Chris brought up his love of DBZ and it reminded me of the first DBZ game I ever got. It was Final Bout on PS1. It was also my first eBay experience. I was 12 and so excited for the game to arrive and when it did, it was not English as advertised. I was so upset but after some online research I found a disc you could put in your English ps1 to play JAP games. Had to spend an extra $40 and go to an obscure local video game shop to buy it. In all the game was not worth it lol

Michal Dudic

Eastern Europe was so PC-heavy because PCs have utility beyond games so it's easier to justify the purchase for families. Plus, being able go pirate games meant that it was a one-time investment. Growing up, I didn't know a single kid with a console but almost everyone had a PC. Love the show as always.

LastStandMedia

It'll be a riveting discussion, though who knows if something else will displace those games for both of us?

LastStandMedia

Dude, eBay was the wild west back then. I think I bought/sold my first games there in 1997, and it felt like I was living in the future.

Michal Dudic

I think it's just that people here didn't have the surplus to spend on something that was entertainment-only. Kids entertainment, specifically. Most folks here are frugal af to this day.

Marc Boggio

I was a little late getting to this one - but I’m completely on board with Chris’ notion that some games are better suited to Mouse/Keyboard or controller. To relate it to an episode 9 topic, I think one of the benefits to mouse/keyboard is that it levels the “feel” of a shooter down to kind of a neutral “good” feeling, if that makes sense. So when people were pissed about Cyberpunk being first person only, all I could think was “sweet, so if the combat doesn’t feel good on a controller, I can easily play it on PC and make it infinitely better”. Destiny 2 on the other hand, feels far better WITH a controller, which kind of makes sense considering Bungie’s pedigree of console FPS mastery.

LastStandMedia

Nothing feels good to me on a mouse and keyboard, so it's all a matter of perspective, I suppose. =)
