I haven't yet watched the reaction, but count me among those who were disappointed in MI7. It really all comes down to the cynical decision to fridge Ilsa, a decision which colored nearly the entire plot. I know it sounds silly to condemn an action movie for the way it portrays its characters, but this is Christopher McQuarrie, screenwriter of "Edge of Tomorrow" and "The Usual Suspects." He's a smart, capable writer. And thus far in the M.I. entries he was part of, they managed to avoid such lazy tropes, subvert expectations, and do well by the female characters. So yeah, I expect more out of this franchise. If I just wanted mindless action, there are plenty other dumb movies I could turn to. I think it wouldn't have been so annoying to me if it wasn't so clearly obvious that Atwell was meant to be the "romantic replacement" to Ferguson. Seriously, the majority of the runtime is devoted to the "enemies to lovers" trope being played out between Ethan and Grace - and that would be fine if this were the first entry in a franchise. Except it's the 7th, and we already know and care about the characters. So nothing really sits right with the audience as the playful banter between Ethan and Grace unfolds. Nor does the ending feel right when Ethan comforts Grace in his arms. Additionally, the *way* that Ilsa goes out feels especially lazy. Gabriel says that "the Entity" requires a sacrifice between Ilsa or Grace? That's completely ludicrous. Why? It's like McQuarrie couldn't think of any justification for getting rid of Ilsa, so he just arbitrarily has the computer program decide it must happen. And then when Ilsa ends up on that bridge, it feels totally pointless. Grace didn't have to be there in the first place. And frankly, Ilsa would not have been beaten by Gabriel in hand-to-hand combat. At least she could've gone out doing something meaningful, gone out like a bad-ass. But nope. And then the rest of the characters go on their merry way with barely a line of dialogue of sadness. Contrast this with MI3 in which Kerri Russell--who we literally didn't know at all--was given a lot of bad-ass things to do when she died. Her death subsequently wrecked the rest of the M.I. team, and she was even able to affect the plot from beyond-the-grave by sending Ethan a microdot posthumously. Honestly, I think I'd rather they had simply not had Ilsa appear at all if they truly insisted on making Atwell the new female love interest.

It's funny, even though the movie is fairly long, it really goes by fast for me. I've watched it twice now and it felt short to me both times. I actually wish it felt longer. My main problem with this movie is that the ending feels like nothing happened other than they survived. We already knew about the key being for the submarine, so it felt quite anticlimactic to me and not much of a cliffhanger. I understand that Ethan now knows, but that didn't feel like enough. The movie also didn't have as many cool action sequences and set pieces as I expected. It had a couple of big stunts, but since we saw those in the marketing they felt a bit disappointing. Most of the stunts in my opinion were fairly common place as far as things I've never seen before. I got the impression that the film tried to make me think it's more epic than it actually was. The big jump and train sequences were the highlights, the rest - the car chase being fairly commonplace to me. I know they shot most of it for real, but it didn't feel that different from most car chases. The stunts of the last film felt bigger to me. Liked all of the actors performances and story, yet I thought there would be more to "Grace's" character than just a good pickpocket/thief. I actually thought that was her who "shot" Iisa at the beginning, but that turned out not to be the case.
