The show adds a ton of depth to John Dee, who originally simply hated his mother and stole the amulet to continue being a supervillain. And I’m sure a certain person here is very happy about how much more this gives David Thewlis to sink his teeth into. Him and Joely Richardson are fantastic together, and it also helps that Ethel’s supernatural youth gives a good reason for once for the mother and son actors being so close in age in real life (Thewlis is actually two years older than her).

Like I said, I’m a trifle fuzzy on John’s character from the pre-existing source material. But yes, the addition of the ton of depth, as you say, certainly has me excited to see David sink his teeth into the material. Just hopefully for David’s sake, he’s got a better set of chompers than what he had in Fargo.
