And here's where these remakes reached a nadir for me, with this movie adding absolutely nothing to the story, with its changes only taking away, and not even pretending it has any reason to exist beyond being a tech demo (though at least it's impressive technology and it's hard to believe the opening shot of the sunrise is the only live action footage in the whole movie, and now that it's had this demo maybe they can actually do something worthwhile with it).

This is the last of the Disney remakes that I had seen prior to these films winning on the poll. Didn't catch it in the theater as I had the newer versions of Dumbo and Aladdin. But like the newer Beauty and the Beast, I had seen this newer Lion King before. Though I don’t have it ranked as high as you do, The Lion King does make my top ten favorite animated Disney films. I love that the score for the original film is your favorite film score. I may not share the opinion, as my favorite film score is one that we will be revisiting soon enough. I also can’t even say that the score for The Lion King is my favorite Disney score as my favorite Disney score is the score for The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Still, Hans Zimmer’s score for The Lion King is wonderous, and it’s great that Hans returned to provide new presentations and rearrangements of his Oscar winning score. In terms of favorite character of The Lion King, Scar is my favorite, of course. I wish that they had gotten Jeremy Irons back, and Jeremy himself indicated he would have done it for free had he been asked. I did enjoy Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar in this newer film. It was a little lacking in the fiendish flamboyance of the old one, though as you posited, the difference in animation style was probably the reason for that. Even so, Chiwetel did a solid job. I’m still massively disappointed with the handling of Be Prepared, which, next to Hellfire, is my favorite Disney song, though you liked it, so I'll shut up about that. My brother and I share your love for Timon and Pumbaa. I had hoped that Nathan Lane and Ernie Sabella could have returned as Timon and Pumbaa. Nathan, especially as my brother and I are enormous fans of his work, particularly The Producers, and especially his performance in The Birdcage. I love that movie. I do agree with you that Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen were just most excellent picks, and they were great in the roles. I also was looking forward to the where Timon would dress in drag and do the hula. Alas, no such luck. And then of course, there was the return of James Earl Jones as Mufasa which warmed the heart. When it came to the emotional scenes, I had a small cry along with you when revisiting the emotional scenes. More specifically, the scenes that concerned Mufasa, though there are somewhat different reasons as to why I got emotional in those parts. Regardless, there were tears shared with you in those scenes, so... To talk about how you challenged us to name a better opening song in a movie than Circle of Life. I probably could if I thought about it some. Sweeney Todd is one that springs to mind fairly quickly, though the opening number from that didn’t make the transition from stage to screen, not vocally anyway. And in terms of Disney, I would argue in favor of the song, The Bells of Notre Dame. Of course, as you say, even if I could definitively name a better opening song, you would NOT agree with me, and that’s ok. Now, in terms of overall opinion of this newer version of The Lion King, I'll freely admit that of the Disney remakes that I've seen, this one felt largely redundant, albeit not anywhere near as bad as say Gus Van Sant’s remake of Psycho. When I first saw this, the opinion was similar to what you said in that nothing much new was added, and what was new didn’t leave all that much of a noticeable impact. Now, having expressed my opinion, I stress that it is only my opinion, which when revisiting this film, I considered my opinions secondary to how you would feel about it. In the end I am pleased to see that you enjoyed it, Jess. And that’s the important thing, if you were ultimately happy with it, I’m happy. And it made for a most delightful and wonderful reaction. Just seeing you singing and dancing along to the songs in particular, and just so clearly seeing the love for the songs and music shine so brightly in your eyes was most special and truly exceptional. I most certainly enjoyed your reaction to this. Thank you so much, Jess.

Be Prepared honestly feels like it's supposed to be a reprise of a song whose full version we never actually got.
