I agree that the premise of the episode is one that was enjoyable. Spock and Scotty being willing to blow up the Enterprise in order to stop the Kelvans particularly goes a long way to properly establish the threat that they pose. It was an interesting concept of having to combat them with human emotions and sensations. I felt so bad for Scotty having to sacrifice a bottle of what I imagine was probably really damn good scotch. Yeah, that guy took a long time to get boiled beyond belief. I also got mad when they deemed Uhura as being non-essential and reduced her to the block thing. You mention about how playing sick could potentially backfire, I think it speaks to the overall optimistic nature of Star Trek, at least the original series that the feigning illness and/or injury technique almost always works. In more cynical settings, I doubt it would be as consistently successful, particularly when dealing with a race of conquerors. Regarding the Kirk “wooing” type scenarios, as you observed it’s not as bad this time given the aforementioned combating with emotions strategy, which ultimately got me to say, “You know what, I’ll give them a bit of a pass on this one.” There is still the issue of how it sets itself up like how you said where they realize what the strategy is, and Kirk pretty much immediately goes, “Well, golly gee, I know what I'm going to do!” I also had a moment where I said, “I get what they’re going for, even then does Kirk have to be as aggressive as he is about this?” When you say that Kirk would not “be even remotely at the top of the list” or however exactly it was that you said it, don’t worry, when it comes to ranking at least the primary characters of the original series, for me, Kirk would be last on my list. Other small moments of the reaction that I quite enjoyed were your surprise when it turned out Lieutenant Shea was not the redshirt that was killed, and I loved your bright side observation that if the Enterprise was to be destroyed, well, at least Sulu wouldn’t get killed. This was a fun Star Trek reaction as per usual. Thanks, Jess.

I get your thinking the black crewman would be killed because that's the cliche, the black characters always get killed first. However the white female crew member being killed would be more devastating to the mainstream 60s audience and Kirk, especially when she told him how scared she was.
