So, I'm still trying to figure out how it happened. When I went to start the previous episode, I discovered that somehow, I had access to AMC+ and thus, this episode. It might just be a promotional trial, and maybe my having access to AMC+ won’t last. But I saw that I could watch this episode, and once I had finished the previous episode, I put this one on, and when it became clear that this was the Alpha episode, I got immensely excited, and yelled, “Oh. Oh! OH! This is the episode Jess was really looking forward to!! Oh my God!!! LET’S GO!!!!” As you know, I haven’t seen a great deal of The Walking Dead, and going into this episode, I realized that of the episodes that I have seen, none of them contained Alpha. I’m aware of some about her character from stuff I’ve heard at work. I know what ultimately happens to her on the parent show as I heard that somewhere. Might have been at work. Maybe from a night out at the bar. More probably heard it at work somewhere. Going by this episode alone, Alpha instantly became an immediate favorite of this universe. Samantha Morton was magnificent in this. You mentioned the thing about exploring Alpha’s past from a different perspective, I heard that was a reason why Samantha came back, that she relished the opportunity to explore Alpha’s past from the different perspective. I found that I related to Alpha in this episode quite a bit. I doubt that that’s a particularly positive thing, but my whole life, I've almost always found the villains to be the most relatable characters, and that’s just the way it crumbles, cookie-wise. I get what you mean by appreciating the explain, not excuse storytelling with Alpha. I also agree that when you say that you love a great villain, you’re not necessarily saying that you are rooting for them, but rather that you love them because they are such a great villain; terrifying and wonderful to watch. There’s a great behind the scenes quote from Aladdin said by Jonathan Freeman regarding his portrayal and the character of Jafar where he says, “For the 10% of kids who are not attracted to the nice guys, it’s very gratifying to know that, you know, Jafar is a hero in some way for them. Not because he’s evil, but because it’s incited their imagination in some way. I like that. I like that idea.” I often apply that quote to when I love really superb villains. There were two moments where I felt so called out in this episode. The first when Billy is insulting and critical of Alpha/Dee by saying that she “should make more of an effort.” and then clarifies by saying that “Brooke bends over backwards making everything nice, and people like you show up looking like drowned opossums, taking advantage of what's provided.” And then when he said that “If you don't want to participate, just go back to your room.” I yelled at the tv, “Well, fuck you too, you jag-off!” The second moment where I felt called out was when Brooke is talking with Alpha/Dee, and tells her, “You're so caught up in all the things that could go wrong that you can't enjoy the good stuff.” to which I responded, “All right, now that’s getting personal there, show!” I’m with you on the idea that though you don’t want to never have moments of indulgence of parties, music, remembering simpler times, it does seem a rather ludicrously bad idea to have that be the higher priority over survival. Yeah, some of those people on the boats caved frighteningly quickly. I again remember my absolute favorite line from The Mist, “As a species we're fundamentally insane. Put more than two of us in a room, we pick sides and start dreaming up reasons to kill one another. Why do you think we invented politics and religion?” A very striking moment where Alpha/Dee cuts and scars Brooke, and how she explains her reasoning as something along the lines of, “You haven’t earned a death at my hands. You live with what you did, marked with shame.” or however she said it. I also got caught off guard by Alpha’s line, “You forget how little nine is. I must have been so small.” That got me, and I then said, “Goddamn, that’s good line.” This episode was so phenomenal, I cried. I swear to God, I'm not making this up when I say that I spent had to have been about twenty minutes to a half hour just kind of wandering through my house in a sort of daze, reeling from just how insanely good it was. This episode was one of the best episodes of tv I've seen all year, likewise your reaction to it has instantly become one of my favorite reactions of yours. Thank you so much for this most terrific reaction, Jess!
