This is the show’s worst story. It’s not even close. I’m all for storytellers taking big risks like a comedy story with a tiny alien who acts like a huge badass, but unfortunately it just didn’t work out, and is made worse by the two most annoying characters also being the ONLY ones who can talk. And they don’t even try to pretend there’s any point to the entire second episode. My only entertainment was trying to figure out if that was Nick Offerman doing the voice (it’s not).

To start with, you worry about if your opinions are going to upset anyone who has this as their favorite story arc. Speaking for myself, don’t worry, this was not my favorite story arc. That comes immediately following this arc. This arc generally speaking is viewed as one of the weakest, if not the weakest. Ironically enough, George Lucas has said that this arc is his favorite of the series, and that the second episode of the arc is perhaps his favorite of the series. Yet, many fans, like I see Ryan has commented, do not feel the same way. It feels like they were trying to go with a kind of Wallace and Gromit type feel, which if so, they don’t hit the mark. When you mentioned about how the episodes were trying terribly hard with the comedic relief, I quipped, “Could be worse, Jar Jar could be involved.” My mind went to Jurassic Park as well during the one scene. And yes, C-3PO's presence in these episodes would have improved them considerably. Regarding the comments you made of people making a hopelessly futile attempt to influence your opinion of 3PO, I relate as I’ve experienced similar experiences of people trying to influence my opinion of Palpatine in that “he is horrible”, that “there is something wrong with me for loving him as much as I do”, and that I “should not have him as my favorite character.” When it happens, I think “You say that as if you were the first person alive to ever tell me such a thing.” Now I can’t change other people’s minds, I won’t change my mind, and I don’t have to, and neither do you have to. You love 3PO, you keep on loving him as much as you do, just as I’m going to keep on loving Palpatine as much as I do, and if people don’t like it, that’s too bad. This was still a great reaction, even if you weren’t too thrilled with the episodes.

Ok, my mind did not go to the thought of “Is that Nick Offerman?” but the mental image of him doing the voice is hysterical. Now I kind of wish that he had provided the voice.

The second episode being Lucas' favorite makes a lot more sense when you consider he started out with the highly abstract sci-fi film THX-1138, and ever since has been swearing that kind of filmmaking was what he really wanted to do, despite never going back to it. It even includes an extended sequence of the hero wandering through a blank white void.
