I’d say I enjoyed the live action Cinderella more than I liked this. Still, I did enjoy this new Jungle Book. The original animated film is one I watched a lot, way back when. May or may not make my top ten Disney films, it depends on whether one counts The Nightmare Before Christmas or not. If not top ten, it’s quite close to it. Yeah, the score is quite fun in the original film. Favorite song was I Wanna Be Like You. Being sung by Louis Prima helped a lot. As is often the case with me, the villains were my favorite parts of this. Shere Khan’s up there pretty high on my list of favorite Disney villains, and Idris Elba did a great job of bringing a charm similar to the charm that was brought by George Sanders in the original film, and Tony Jay in subsequent Disney projects, whilst still making the role his own. Scarlett Johansson would not have been on my list of candidates for Kaa, yet she did a phenomenal job. Particularly striking was how Kaa was portrayed less comical than Sterling Holloway and later Jim Cummings portrayed Kaa. I felt so bad for you during the scene with Kaa, Jess. Both during my first time watching this and seeing your reaction. I even got somewhat physically uncomfortable during the scene, and I’m not bothered by snakes all that much. So, if that bothered me, I am only able to imagine the nightmares you’ll have from the scene. Hopefully they’re not too bad. I’d say you handled the scene relatively well, all things considered. You may disagree with my assessment, and I wouldn’t blame you if you did, but it’s my opinion that you handled the scene well, considering the circumstances. And it’s helpful that following Kaa’s big scene that she never popped up later in the film and that her screentime was all finitoed after Baloo saved Mowgli from her. And then there’s Christopher Walken as King Louie who stole the show. The easter-egg with the cowbell had me in stitches. I’m really happy that you’re really happy that you’re finally getting to see these films, Jess. Sharing these films with you is proving to be so much fun.

There's some stuff I really love about this movie, especially the CGI backgrounds where it's honestly hard to believe there isn't a single actual exterior shot in the whole thing. But it also suffers badly from indecision over how to use the original film's songs. Rather than just dispensing with them entirely like Cinderella, here we get Trust In Me reduced to a single spoken line, The Bear Necessities turned into an in-universe song where Mowgli notices Baloo is singing, and finally I Wanna Be Like You is just plopped in pure musical-style, even though nothing like this happens anywhere else in the movie. It just ends up being confusing and makes it impossible for me to get truly involved in the story.

It was even worse in the theater, where Kaa's voice kept moving around different speakers so you truly felt like she could pop up anywhere.
