Toasted Toad

Another great reaction with such insightful comments at the end. As you can tell, the programme is holding things back from you - much more than you can guess at present - but you'll eventually get all the answers. Some people get annoyed with Sam in this episode, insisting that Dean share his grief with him - "tell me, tell me, tell me". Only at the end does he leave Dean to grieve in peace, although he perhaps gives him the nudge he needs to be able to let out his anger. So I think the MOTW aspect was fine - nothing to write home about - but the broments were much more interesting. Yes, some people do have difficulty with the nature of the show - i.e. no ensemble cast, just J2 and the extras of the week. It's very different from most shows and can be a bit claustrophobic. I think they carry it off because J2 are so great together and because of the drama they work in to the series. But eventually, the cast will expand (especially from Season 4 when they started getting a bigger budget). It won't be a true ensemble, but there will be new cast members who form a big part of the show.

Frankly, anyone “annoyed” with Sam for “insisting Dean share his grief with him,” must have missed the part where Sam said he didn’t give a shit if it was him Dean turned to. “I don’t care how you deal with this, but you HAVE to deal with it.” He knows he’s the only one Dean might even reasonably be willing to turn to. But he doesn’t give a shit about that. He can just SEE how absolutely shut down Dean is, and it kills him to see his big brother in so much pain. And so unwilling to admit it. Because holding onto that pain will destroy someone. He also knows there’s no damned way Dean lets those walls down without being pushed to it. Because he knows Dean. He misgauges a bit, the first time he tries, which he quickly figures out. Because as soon as Dean lashes out at him, Sam doesn’t fight back. Doesn’t argue. Dean hurts him, but Sam takes the pain because he knows it’s just Dean’s way of making him back off. So Sam backs off, and doesn’t let the rather low emotional blow get to him. Then he takes a moment to think, and when he comes back, he’s much more effective. He comes completely clean with what he’s feeling. Doesn’t hide a thing. Makes a full and frank confession, and owns his shit. Lays out where he’s at emotionally. And, at the end, quietly, he tosses out just the tiniest bit of a lifeline. Here’s where I’m at. I don’t know where you are. But I know it’s nowhere good. I’m nowhere good either. So, there’s that. I’ll leave you alone, because I know you aren’t ready. But I’m here. It’s about as good as little-brothering gets, when you’re trying to love someone who makes it so damned hard to be there for them.
