The series' producers have said if they could pick only one film in the series to be preserved for posterity, it would be this one. And to give you the full context for the opening credits, they have scenes from all the previous Bond films, though no shots with Bond himself to allow Lazenby to ease into the role. The scene in his office also has him picking up props from three of the previous films, with a snippet of their theme song played over each. Quite an impressive showing of continuity from the days long before anyone expected that kind of thing from movies, and there was no Internet to help keep everything straight.

So - a word on the bad guy... Not that this is Telly Savalas's fault, but it's horribly, horribly miscast. Ernst Stavro Blofeld is the nearest that Bond has to an arch-enemy - he's appeared in multiple films and, upto this point, had been in three of the previous movies. In the first two the audience had only seen the back of his head and his hand stroking his white cat. He wouldn't be revelled in full till You Only Live Twice. And -that- performance was iconic - the characterisation that was given to Blofeld in that movie - thanks to a mesmeric perfonace by Donald Pleasance - has lived on - if you ever saw Inspector Gadget as a child or Danger Mouse, or Austin Powers you'd recognise the character in an instant. Now, for this movie, they needed a Blofeld who was much more physically active - skying and whatnot - The previous version of Blofeld couldn't have done it - and Savallas isn't bad in of himself. But he's no Blofeld.

This film is pretty faithful to the Ian Fleming novel. Fleming makes it clear that Bond feels a complete rat for seducing Ruby for information;but it was 'all in the line of duty' etc. His characterisation of Tracy was more detailed. The book begins,as in the film, with 007 preventing Tracy's suicide;but then jumps back 24 hours or so when we discover that they already knew each other. It traces the story of their first meeting, the day before, at the casino etc;and then we learn that the reason Tracy was wanting to kill herself was because it was the first anniversary of the death of her baby daughter from meningitis. She now feels that after the death of both her husband (the Italian Count that Draco mentions) and her baby, she has nothing left in her life. Bond is rather more tender in the novel;and the courtship takes its time. The death of Tracy is rather more distressing, and the last couple of paragraphs are genuinely moving,as it's made clear that Bond is not going to recover easily. "Bond's head sank down against hers and he whispered into her hair - 'you see, we've got all the time in the world'. The young patrolman took a last scared look at the motionless couple, hurried over to his motorcycle, picked up the hand-microphone and began talking urgently to the rescue headquarters". The next film in the series contains almost NO continuity at all;but the next book (should you care to read it, it's You Only Live Twice) starts about 6 months later, and Bond has suffered a nervous breakdown and is considered too much of a security risk to continue in the 00 Section. The only thing that keeps him going is an almost insane desire for revenge against the two people who killed his wife. Don't expect any of that in the movie series, though!

Oh,and the reason that George Lazenby didn't make another Bond film was that (by his own admittance) he behaved like a dick! He was not co-operative during production;pissed a lot of people off;and then arrogantly announced that he wasn't going to do another movie for them. He basically destroyed his own career;as he was blacklisted after that. Nonetheless,he's a charismatic man;and became a successful businessman dealing in Malibu real estate to the rich and famous. He's become very affable over the years, and is on good terms with Barbara Broccoli (the current Producer of the Bond films). He was also a good friend of Roger Moore. According to Moore, they used to try and outdo each other with their knowledge of dirty jokes!

In perhaps his second biggest role, the King of the Royal Flush Gang in Batman Beyond, he actually has the line "Do you have any idea what it's like to spend your life in someone else's shadow?"

when i went through all the bonds many years ago i remember disliking this one a lot cause it was just hours of talking and then going ice skating with Lady Olenna so lets see if my opinion has changed lol
