Well, he did it. He actually did it. After month of posturing, years of undeclared war, and even longer lying to our faces, Putin authorised Russia's invasion of Ukraine. How did it come to this? Is Putin the only variable that matters? Does diplomacy still have a chance? Where do I see all of this going? You may not think you need yet another person talking about this war, but just in case you do, join me here, as I explain why this war happened, and why it's personal to me. It's my first time wading into modern affairs with such venom, so I hope you enjoy it!

I know the last thing you need are more series ideas, but the Russian Civil War and the various external/internal players might be an interesting topic. (As is, on another completely unrelated note, the Iran/Iraq War, which involved the USSR and USA simultaneously backing Saddam at one point, and Israel backing Iran!) Also, did you see Zelensky's recent interview where he's open to "compromise" on the breakaway republics and has emphasized his lack of desire to join NATO before you issued this podcast? If not, does this reflect any real change in the diplomatic situation between Ukraine, Russia, and the West, or if you have, has this been his stance all along and is something he's trying to emphasize for foreign audiences? I'm sorry if it's an obvious question, and I hope you don't take my questions the wrong way given how passionately you feel on the topic. The truth is I'm not well informed on the backdrop of Ukrainian politics over the last decade or two, so I genuinely don't know.

I hear on another podcast that the playbook Putin is following is that of far-right philosopher Aleksandr Dugin and his Fourth Political Theory -- and the Russian actions of the last 10-12 years make more sense if this is true. If true -- isolation is not to be dreaded -- it is what their desired outcome is. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fourth_Political_Theory

As a U. S. military veteran with 31 years of active service, I wanted to comment that I enjoyed this program. Really enjoyed it. Every word of it. I liked it so much, I increased my pledge. Best to you, and I look forward to more history.

Hi Lee, thank you so much for this, and your kind words! I'm delighted it struck a chord with you. Even my Dad listened to it, and he hasn't listened to my podcast in ten years :D

Interestingly, I'm currently reworking my Versailles episodes into a two volume book, and I literally have to stop myself from going into too much detail for the Russian part of the story. It's amazing the period isn't more well known, but I think part of the issue is there's just so much going on. It can be very hard to keep up, kind of like the situation in Turkey at the same time.

Also regarding Zelensky's compromise, they just refused to surrender any territory, including Mariupol, so that suggests a hard line. I can only hope they adhere to this position. Putin doesn't deserve to get anything as a reward for his behaviour.
