"Learn from other nations, study their culture and bring their ideas with you. Even if our nation offers the finest democracy since Ancient Athens, even if we don’t allow dictatorship, nor savage rule, still you will learn a lot of things by visiting the western lands. I recommend you stay in Paris for further studies. There is no other city like this in Europe."
These were the words of Jan Sobieski's father Jakub (pictured), as he waved his sons off on their European tour - a traditional growing exercise of all well-to-do sons of the Commonwealth nobility.
In spring, 1646, it was Jan Sobieski's turn to see the world and begin his own story. It is a story we are about to acquaint ourselves with, and one we will stick to like glue for the next eleven episodes, concluding in late December. I have been super excited to present it to you guys, so I hope you'll join in as we detail the life and times of one of Europe's most remarkable, if understudied, statesmen, military heroes, and kings - all rolled into one.
