This really is one of my all time favourites. Lord Darlington is a fictional character, but he represents a large group of people in the 30s who wanted to appease Germany. Many like the Lord were mostly naïve and foolish, but some were definitely sympathetic to fascism, especially when there was the sense of renewal that on the surface it seemed to bring to Germany and Italy after war and the Depression. Most of this fell away once the war became unavoidable and the holocaust basically killed English fascism as acceptable politics (but, you know, has stuck around on the fringes and less on the fringe in the age of Brexit and Trump). Yes, I think you're reading the the window frame as prison bars at the end correctly, and Stephens is now fully knowing that he has caged himself. By the way, Queen Cersei – Lena Headey – is the maid who goes off to marry Charlie.
