Louise Fletcher (Wynn) may be best known for her villainous roles but she didn't always play a villain, and one of those movies might be right up RolyPolyOllie's alley. Largely forgotten today, 1983's Brainstorm is a sci-fi movie with an intriguing premise and a banging James Horner score, directed by Douglas Trumbull, who is best known as an SFX creator for movies like 2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and Blade Runner. Not only is Fletcher not a villain, but Christopher Walken is less weird than usual. The movie does have some problems, including the fact that Natalie Wood drowned while on a break near the end of filming. In order to complete the movie for release, they had to employ a variety of film-making tricks to get around her loss--using her sister as a body double, editing existing recorded dialog together to substitute for ADR, editing and reusing alternative takes, etc. Nonetheless, there are some striking and sometimes very emotional sequences, and one of those just belongs to Fletcher. As you would expect, the effects are pretty good for 1983. Available for streaming on a number of platforms.
