Hairpins were a common gift for a man to give his girlfriend in ancient times. it is a symbol of love ^^

So the giving of hairpins usually has 2 different context: - a sign of love interest to that person - a sign of favor for that person Maomao recieved 3 different type of hairpins: - Jinshi's is supposed to represent love interest - Gyokuyo's and Lihua's to represent favor - Lihaku's is just supposed to be a consolation prize To be able to exit the palace and visit the outside world, a servant needs guarantor to be able to leave. The guarantor is usually the one who gives a hairpin to the servant in the garden party out of love interest. Then they usually spend this time out of the palace for COURTSHIP purposes. Maomao unknowingly disregards this concept and just assumed the hairpins just symbolizes the ability of the giver to become a guarantor. With this concept in mind, it was easy to understand why Lihaku was pissed at Maomao at first last episode, he thought that Maomao was proposing courtship, when she just wants to use him as guarantor. Jinshi this episode was pissed, cuz he thought Maomao ends up accepting courtship with Lihaku instead of him. LOL

Mao Mao is a dense romance protagonist.

Hmm... so that quick scene where Maomao was told to visit the "annex" showed us a glimpse of a woman who was bedridden, and Maomao just hunched down in a corner. We've never actually been introduced to her mom right? Maybe that was her mother? I'm very curious to know more about that aspect and her supposed connection to the royal palace.

I think the hairpin had a mistress meanig. The recipient person have a "official" lover, or something...
