Episode 19 Notes: One thing I want to point out is actually Chitanda does NOT get into most people's personal space, she only does it with two people we've seen Oreki and Irisu, and Irisu she sees like a cool big sister she's known since she was young because both their families are old money. However she attached herself to Oreki very quickly from the beginning. Also notice before when Oreki would try to pass his skills off as luck, Chitanda would just let him, but no she insists on getting him to admit to himself he is talented and is being more involved with his inner life. And yes she asking him to light some insense at her Uncle's Grave is a sign she wants to bring him closer to a more personal part of her life. And notice Oreki doesn't even fight or say no but agrees. By the way not sure if you got it but Oreki started the game to try to prove that he does nothing but bullshit his way and come up with harebrained theories and he doesn't have deductive talent, however his words betray his actions, and he and Chitanda end up so wrapped up in their "game" they forgot why they are doing it in the first place. If you notice Chitanda shows more forward irritation and challenges him more, while Oreki shows a more playful side (His humor is dry but he does joke and tease her.) When Chitanda gets in his face, notice this time she actually is shy and bashful. Before when she didn't like Oreki (Or rather was stilling falling and didn't realize it.) she didn't feel self-conscious getting in his personal space at all, now she very much is. Notice how coy and playful she looks when she asks if we can deduce what their game was about anyway, and Oreki actually smiles warmly for her to stop it. Basically the entire "deduction" was Chitanda and Oreki flirting. To avoid taking the next step Oreki had to "prove" she can't rely on him, and Chitanda had to prove the opposite, basically Oreki lost in the short term but in terms of actual happiness he won. And yes the Paper implies in the end he indeed 100% guessed what actually happened. From this point on, in the series, both in the anime and the later Novels Oreki NEVER calls his deduction ability him being "lucky" again. Will be typing episode 20 in another comment.

Episode 20 notes: They are in Highschool as I've said in previous comments Oreki is 5' 8'' the Average Height of a Japanese Male, Satoshi is shorter than Average, Chitanda is slightly taller for a Japanese Female, and Mayaka is super tiny. The Shrine Maiden that goes to greet Chitanda is indeed her friend from the cultural festival running the fortune telling both that had her tarot card stolen by Jumonji, she is one of the four rising power families and old money as well. She was actually mentioned in episode 1 when they were looking for the fake note. There is some subtext throughout the episode of Oreki feeling like a fish out of water in these old money family politics and world, which is likely one reason why Chitanda wanted to bring him along, to break him in and get her use to life as a future inlaw. At this point she is playing the long game. Even if your bad with names Ibara and Irisu look, act, and sound completely different...... Oreki's "bad luck" might be subtext to him wishing to "conserve" energy for his new years wish and yet that might be his answer, so that "bad luck" might serve him in the long run. "I don't care what anyone says in the comments" You don't know toxic Asian Culture I guess. The Whole "explain stuff thing" I know that sounds like common sense to use American's but Toxic Rich Tradition Asian Society would have seen it as shameful. I asked some Asian Friends and they are all like "Yeah" they would definitely think something inappropriate happened or think just the situation even if nothing happened would be shameful. Chitanda and her Family are part of very traditional old money circles. Dem Rumors be flying. I should note when this short story was originally written in the Novels cellphones weren't really a common thing, in the Novels this story takes place in 2001, in the anime they bump it up to 2012. So they had to add the cellphone line in for modern audiences. The Special Satoshi and Oreki watches is actually a very common one often played during the Holidays in Japan, its like Frosty the Snowman for us Americans. The point of the episode is that Oreki is willing to go the extra mile when he doesn't have to for Chitanda's reputations sake even when its not something he "has to do."

"You don't know toxic Asian Culture I guess." I'd rather not have people like you outside Asia treat us like a monoculture and trashtalk us based on your ignorant assumptions. This is more of an ancient/medieval culture that existed all over the old world, and more apparent to the imperial/hierarchal ones like Japan/China/Korea. Even medieval Europe had this "face culture" until very recently in history. This also existed and still exists in more conservative Christian and Muslim communities at varying levels. Many Asian nations aren't the same, especially at present. Lots of Southeast Asian nations don't care as much about face culture as you might imagine just like the west, and it's not the western modernizations that taught them or first got away of this culture. Even where I live, we don't have this supposedly "asian toxic culture" you're talking about.
