Here we have one of the last commissions on my list right now: Abbey being nice to Paris...while also being nice to herself.

I was working on several pieces at once, while doing this one, so I had to be as economical with my time as possible. I got lucky, in that I really liked the original thumbnail I sketched (not that it was a true thumbnail, at around 5"x 8") this time. So much so, that I scanned and enlarged it to full size on my laptop, then made two cropped versions: a left half and a right half. After printing them out, I taped them together, creating one full-size (roughly 11"x17") image. Then I did the faux carbon paper thing, going over the lines with pencil on the back, then taping it down on my drawing surface and burnishing the lines with a bone tool. I removed the transfer paper, revealing my original sketch, now transferred to the Bristol board. All I had to do was correct some proportional and compositional problems that became apparent at the larger size, then do my detailed penciling. Normally my thumbnails are too rough for this technique, but occasionally even I catch a break.
