I was commissioned to do three pieces involving Velma from Scooby Doo (the second and third involving Abbey, so stay tuned for those), one of which was to be my take on the character. I get this quite a bit, people wanting to see my impression of their favorite character, and it's fine. But I always feel like I disappoint with what I create, because it usually looks pretty close to the original or most iconic version of that character. It just seems wrong--and a bit egotistical--to change someone else's character, at least without the creator's approval (and yes, I'm aware that most artists wouldn't give a rat's ass). So this time I tried something new. I drew Velma as she's traditionally depicted, then asked myself what I would do differently, according to "my style".  I know she probably looks like regular old Velma to you, but there are quite a few tweaks. Her eyes, believe it or not, are quite a bit larger than Velma's eyes usually are. My character's eyes have drifted larger over the years, but any larger than what you see here and you would start to lose some of her "Velmaness". I've also given her eyelashes, defined nostrils, and more freckles. And of course, I've augmented a part of her body, but that probably goes without being said. Hopefully it has enough of me in it to satisfy the commissioner; if not, sorry, but I like Velma, I didn't want to screw her up!
