I actually like Katara's choice in this scenario. I do think that the idea is that there is a middle ground between forgiveness and revenge. I think that it's ok to not forgive people who have done something so terrible. The way I see it is that not striving for revenge is about one not stooping to the level of the person who did the terrible thing. However, I believe that forgiveness has to be earned. Zuko earns forgiveness by working to right the wrongs made by him and his family. The man that killed Katara's mother has showed no sign of changing or repenting his crimes, at least in Katara's eyes. Should she kill him? No. Does that mean that she has to forgive him? Also no. I think people like to make it out that forgiveness is the only way to heal, but I think one can heal without forgiveness, as long as they don't hold onto the anger. It's called finding the balance in between. I can only imagine that if someone intentionally murdered one of my parents, I would never forgive them.
