Hey Patrons! Something very different for you here...

Xyla Foxlin and I have been collaborating on a ridiculous holiday themed project, and it's time to fly it! We're shoving an L1000 rocket motor into a full sized Christmas tree in the name of holiday spirit!

We're flying it out in Mojave and the stream quality should be pretty good. There's not much scientific value here BUT it will be a lot of fun. It's very hard to simulate the aerodynamics of a Christmas tree, and boy have I tried, but apogee is somewhere between like 100 and 500m?? maybe??? sorta????

We're gonna stick a flight computer on there as well to flash the lights and I think we might try to blink out the velocity? Not sure on that yet. The lights will do something cool for sure.

We're doing a few other fun things as part of this project, so stay tuned!

In other news, I've got a few endmills in the mail that will help us pin and lock the fins on Fineas - it's a good middle-ground fix that lets us continue using many of the same parts that failed before, while fixing their faults. We'll need to do some more ground testing again before flying, but we're on track to still do that in December :)

Blue skies, and happy holidays!

Joe

That sounds incredible! Have you seen the Matt Parker (Standup Maths) video where he mapped all the lights on a Christmas tree and ran software to do fun stuff? I believe his code is fully available at a link in the description of the video. No clue if that's helpful, but figured I'd share just in case! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvlpIojusBE
