Content

Hey hey everyone! Hope everyone are doing well!

Usually i try to avoid doing some "news" posts here, and trying to focus on delivering some new content, but this news heavily affects the whole Patreon platform, so i feel like i need to share it to you asap. Well, attached email screenshot pretty much says it all.

Long story short - it seems like Apple is about to introduce 30% fee to all new Patreon memberships purchased in iOS App Store, starting from November 2024.

By the example provided by Patreon website itself - if you are using Patreon application from iOS AppStore, and for example you support Patreon creator via 10$ subscription, your subscription price may get raised up to 14.50$ cause of new Apple Fee policy.

From how we understand the situation, if you are subscribing to us (or any other creator on Patreon) from your browser or just any other PC/Android phone/device, your subscription pricing should stay the very same. So if you are using your iphone to sub to us or other creators through the iOS app, please consider switching and using your browser instead so you don't have to pay the new fees. Supposedly existing subs won't be affected, but if you leave and re-sub later for our releases for example it will apply to you in that case.

Additionally, and this wont affect our Patreon page at least for now, it seems like Patreon website is gonna get rid of a lot of other membership types (like pay-for-creation), because this new 30% Apple-Fee system "doesnt support it". Patreon CEO provides some more info about the matter https://youtu.be/L-LoTH3PzgM

We apologize for any inconvenience it may cause. I really hope this decision will be cancelled, but well... something tells me it wont, at least in a short term. We will keep you updated on the matter, and hopefully bring some good news on this topic in future.

If you have some questions, i'll try to answer as much as i can in comments, but this new system is as new to me, as it is to you too.

Stay safe n healthy and til then!

Man, I kinda feel bad for you creators. I feel like people might not understand and think Patreon just isn’t worth it anymore, which is really sad. But I think this should all blow over eventually. The outrage and backlash from subscribers might honestly cost Apple more trouble than it’s worth. At least, I hope it will

ViciNeko

Just like the dude in this video said ttps://youtu.be/L-LoTH3PzgM - just imagine being a creator, that creates stickers for their community. They use Pay-for-creation model and all that stuff. And then Apple comes, tells that now some of your clients pay 30% more just cause Apple said so. Ah yeah, and u cant do ur business anymore, cause our 30% fee doesnt support ur subscription/selling model. Like wtf... And Patreon will obey, cause otherwise they may risk being removed from iOS App Store... Like a lose-lose for everyone: subscribers, creators, platform... But Apple gets more $

Michael the Anime Fan

Huh? This sounds exactly the opposite of what the EU told Apple to do. Are they doubling down on every other region because they’re salty?

ViciNeko

In terms of Patreon, it seems like it will affect all iOS subscribers that subbed via AppStore application. Regardless of their region/country... And from my understanding, its not just Patreon, its ALL iOS AppStore purchases...

Michael the Anime Fan

That’s definitely illegal in EU, as this was that one point they lost at in their lawsuit with Epic Games. So if they actually go through with forcing Patreon to do this in the EU, then there needs to be whistleblowers bringing this to the European Union’s attention, because they DO NOT like their rules and laws getting ignored, and Apple needs to realize that even though it might not happen because of backlash from the consumers, the EU has the right to ban Apple from all sales in all the countries currently under the EU’s control, which is most of the European countries at this time, something that will hurt their profits way more than any simple one-time fine will. Apple needs to realize that they’re not omnipotent, and there are rules to being in the European market.

ViciNeko

I really hope EU-kun will save us there, cause right now it all sounds just awful. From what it seems, Apple literally affects the whole Patreon platform direction now, so who knows what they will require next as their "new policy"...

I actually did some research and it seems that it’s not enforceable yet, because of how the appeal system works. Apple has appealed the decision, which means that any ruling the court did is frozen until the appeal either gets denied or goes through. Which means (although it pains me to say it) that Apple is actually legally allowed to do this in the EU region as well. Which I think is bloody ridiculous, because they say it’s to prevent irreversible changes to a company, but Apple is part of the top 10 BIGGEST companies IN THE WORLD, so how in the heck is them not getting their 30% cut going to cause irreversible changes to their company? They’ve got plenty of money already, and those 30% they get from the App Store is chump change compared to their profits on hardware sales for example. It’s completely ridiculous, this is just pure, undisguised greed…

ViciNeko

Apple here is just saying "f you" to everyone - Patreon, subscribers, creators, other platforms, its own users, just to get even more money... Just as u said, insane level of greed.

Alaxander

apple is just begging to lose another lawsuit at this rate.

Bloodlord

Well thankfully I don't use any Apple products but man that's sucks for people who do.

Michael the Anime Fan

Yeah, exactly this. They might say some ridiculous excuses like the one they’ve already tried "the 30% fee is to maintain a safe environment of apps" citing maintenance costs, but they’ve never spoken out on why it’s so high, or given a cost analysis to justify why it’s so high. If it was 10% or 15% instead, a lot of people might’ve tolerated that, but it’s twice that at a whole whopping 30%, which is completely ludicrous to me.

Blackninja3006

So this is only effects apple users?

yo_moe-13

Didn’t they do something like this to Fortnite mobile? I can’t believe as a company you get outed as an illegal monopoly and then decided to be an even worse bastard.

bobbyfr7769

Honestly, one can only hope that either EU will wake up, or that Apple will make it to the point where they can be penalized for monopoly

Michael the Anime Fan

Sadly, I think EU’s hands are tied here with regards to the ruling, as that’s just how the appeal process is sadly. But you are right that this doesn’t prevent them from making a new ruling. So maybe we’ll just have to wait until Apple gets too big for its britches and it eventually collapses onto them.

Reian

And they called Google a monopoly for paying companies to set Google as the default search engine. Here comes Apple forcing companies to remove alternative payment methods on Apple devices. Make it make sense. xD

jesus

Thanks god i use patreon only on samsung and my i phone i use for work etc xd

Invisible Grunt

So we just have to sign in through a pc or laptop to keep paying same price. Or resubscribe through a pc/laptop.

Jerad200

So what I get out of this is that Android is better. xD

LEP111

Just subscribe in the Web

ViciNeko

Tho it seems like it may take a while, cause both Patreon and Apple seem to be USA based companies...

ViciNeko

Thats the sad part - it affects even those, who are not using their products. Patreon is getting rid of subscription systems, that are not supported by Apple-fee system, so it may seriously disrupt some subscribers/creators way of sharing their stuff

ViciNeko

By the info provided by Patreon itself, 30% price raise only affects new Patreon memberships purchased in iOS App Store, starting from November 2024. But it also heavily affects creators who were using (for example) pay-for-creation model, cause Patreon gets rid of all but standard subscription systems (cause Apple-fee doesnt support any other sub models)

ViciNeko

Seems like these companies never lose. If one way fails, they just get their money somewhere else. This "somewhere else" is us today.

ViciNeko

Theres no way it wont bite them back, so i hope this decision will be cancelled in future. But this future may still be far away

ViciNeko

And sadly, it still will affect the Patreon communities that are using non-standard sub system, like pay-for-creation, even if they have nothing to do with Apple at all

ViciNeko

If i understand correctly, u just need to evade subscribing through the iOS app. If you use your iphone, and subscribe via browser, u probably will be fine too (๑❛ڡ❛๑)👍

bobbyfr7769

The larger Apple gets the more satisfying it’ll be to watch it fall right down onto its fat arse

Xariss

ViciNeko definitly worth the fee anyway so I would pay it regardless, but lucky I sub on browser

Matt Mox

So what if I subscribed using the browser but then added the app on my iPhone to get more convenient updates? Or is this just for users who only subscribe via the iPhone app?

ViciNeko

U are too kind. Thank you! ❤️ (⁄ ⁄ ⁄ω⁄ ⁄ ⁄)⁄ ❤️

ViciNeko

The Patreon article above says, that its just for those who subscribed via AppStore app. But to be 100% sure about such specific situation, i think it will be best to ask Apple Support itself...

Themanofculture W

Fortunately I won’t be unsubscribing, it’s peak here.

Exotos

Good thing I use android.
