Another show that does the "story within a play" really well is Revue Starlight. Also, I always wonder if Aka Akasaka (the author) thought no one would read his story about theater kids without the murder mystery reincarnation part lol, because it honestly would work pretty well on its own imo

You’re completely right with what you said at the end about him not even resembling his old self anymore. In season 1 in one of the episodes Aqua struggled with figuring out just how much of him is his old life and how much is his new life. And now in this season the manifestation of his trauma is a shadowy version of his old self, chastising him for enjoying acting and forgetting about his mission to avenge Ai. In a lot of ways his old life memories are a curse forbidding him from pursuing the path his mother wanted him to be. It’s just all really great and effective stuff, repackaging what was a super weird fantastical premise into something rich with meaning and symbolism.
