On the topic of horror, I think one of the problems is movies trying to justify a big theatrical release and trying to be too much. I'd recommend you check out Cabinet of Curiosities on netflix as it's an 8 episode anthology so basically 8 completely unique horror short films. Not all of them are trying to be as scary but I think they're all interesting horror, with some notable stand outs. It's put together by Guillermo Del Toro and you'll recognize a lot of the actors they brought in for the different stories. You could probably watch 4 of these in the time it takes to go out and see a two hour film in theaters at least
