The one time Quintin Tarantino adapted a book resulting in an interesting film following the incredible Jackie Brown in a battle of wits.  Fascinating film and I was definitely questioning all kinds of things throughout.

Elmore Leonard is an absolute legend, highly prolific throughout a six decade career right up to his death, and without a single bad story in the bunch. And despite the title change, this film is an extremely faithful adaptation of Rum Punch, the only changes being Leonard's usual Florida setting being moved to California (and consequently the drugs being smuggled from Mexico rather than the Bahamas) and Jackie being a white woman whose last name is Burke. Tarantino just really wanted to work with Blaxploitation legend Pam Grier and altered the character accordingly, even changing her name to emphasize it. And while it's questionable how intentional this was since the dialogue is exactly the same, her new race definitely adds a whole new level of subtext to her scenes with the cops who are manipulating her into helping them.

Should we suggest Out of Sight? Same universe, similar vibe, good movie. Its a helluva lotta fun, but I can take it or leave it.
