A stellar guest cast in yet another impressively imaginative episode of Doctor Who! This time our travelers are joined by Adam and as usual everything goes perfectly according to plan. Or not.

Simon Pegg is one of the very few actors to appear in Doctor Who, Star Wars, and Star Trek. He was originally cast in the following episode, but when a scheduling issue came up, he eagerly took the chance to play a villain instead, having wanted to do it on the show since he was a kid. Though he didn’t have a very good experience as Christopher Eccleston wasn’t shy about his disapproval of Pegg’s comical acting style, causing Pegg to still call him “old misery guts.” Though he apparently did take some advice from it as his later villain role in The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is played much more seriously, and I actually think it’s the best performance he’s ever done. There was also an issue where for whatever reason he was completely unable to pronounce the Jagrefess’ full name properly, and the scene in the episode features the best take he was able to do with the monster growling over his mistakes.

Hold up. Are you saying that Simon Pegg was supposed to play Rose's dad?! (just watched it lol) Because... My familiarity with Simon Pegg might have lessened the impact. Then again, maybe not. We'll never know.

I like that the writers took a moment to let the viewer know that the Doctor has standards when it comes to companions. Break the rules, you'll be taken home. Also, you mention the world building. That's the great thing about a show that can be set anywhere in the universe and at any time! The writers can really let their imaginations go wild, and take up places we couldn't even dream of.

Absolutely! He clearly looks for specific qualities and it's great to acknowledge Rose wasn't chosen because she was pretty and present. Although she has consistently proven her worth, it's stll great to hear him say it.
