You never know when the Coens will completely ignore all the rules of storytelling, and if the end of Hudsucker Proxy is the ultimate example of that distilled into a single scene, Big Lebowski is what happens when the entire movie is nothing but that. Just about every character seems like they’ve wandered in from a different kind of movie, and none of their stories get any resolution because our viewpoint character is some nobody stoner who doesn’t care about any of it. And yet, the whole thing is just so fun that it’s hard to care about any of that and you’re just happy you’re along for the ride. The only other movie they’ve done that comes close to the pure anarchy here is Burn After Reading, and even that puts a little more effort into having a purpose to the story.

The Coens frequently take source material and rewrite/twist it into their own creation. The Big Lebowski is a loose adaptation of The Big Sleep (a Bogart noir legendary for being a complicated mess.) Further Coen films hopefully you get to one day, Chris (zero spoilers in these "descriptions"...the movies depart significantly from their sources.) Blood Simple is an "adaptation" of a sequence from Hitchcock's Torn Curtain (a skippable Hitch film, tbc.) Miller's Crossing is a mish-mash of two Dashiell Hammett novels. Red Harvest and The Glass Key. Raising Arizona is a loose, surreal "sequel" to Of Mice and Men. (I could explain...but no one wants that, right?) Fargo *must* be from some noir source...I mean, it just MUST. Hemmingway's The Killers + something else? I dunno. Again, Chris: even if you read and saw everything I just mentioned...the films are their own things, unspoiled by knowing their inspirations.

You nailed something that I couldn't even begin to find the words for in this reaction. The movie is kind of all over the place, but it still works for some inexplicable reason.

That is so fascinating, honestly to take those inspirations yet completely make it their own. I can kind of see the big sleep now that you say it, and yet despite the insanity of this movie it makes way more sense than that movie 😅
