Welcome to the first watch a long for Doctor Who! I am so excited to start this show with you and I'm happy to say I absolutely LOVED this first episode. It was everything I hoped it would be.

This show is presented in a watch a long format which means you need your own copy of the episode to sync with mine. I watched the bluray, but I believe it is currently streaming on Max (although I heard it's moving to Disney+ in November). I keep a blurred out version on screen with a timestamp to make it as easy as possible to stay in sync with me.

*edit* Unfortunately, my blu-ray runs the NTSC version of the episode which runs 4% slower than the streaming version so if you're watching on streaming it does not stay in sync. I'm truly sorry about that! I switch to the streaming version on episode 7.

I've made this first episode available for everyone to watch, but if you enjoy the experience you can continue watching the show with me for only $5.00 a month. I'd love to have you as a part of our Patreon community.

I had assumed that someone who was more knowledgable about Doctor Who than I am would have given you a bunch of background, but I don't see any (other than Ryan and the Autons). All I've got is this little tip of the hat to the original series. The first Massive Historical Event that Clive shows Rose a photo of is the motorcade with President Kennedy just before he was assassinated, with The Doctor in the crowd. The assassination took place on November 22, 1963. Doctor Who the television show premiered on the BBC on November 23, 1963. Due to extended news broadcasts and (power cuts), the BBC ran a repeat of the first episode directly before airing the second episode the following week, giving it more of a chance to reach intended viewers--children. Doctor Who started out as a children's program to teach history, by traveling backwards in time, and science, by traveling forwards in time.

I'm sure those people will show up once we go live on YouTube publically :) That said, I love the idea that we would go to the past to explore history and the future to explore science. Such a simple, yet compelling approach. Although, I'm glad the new seasons don't appear to be trying to teach necessarily. Meh, I'm still open to learn a little something.

Oh they abandoned the whole "educational" thing a few years after it premiered (I want to say in the fourth season in 67-68? Maybe?) when it became clear that the viewers were only interested in the sci-fi adventure stories, so never fear -- no classroom required 😜

does the blu-ray version run slower that the stream version? i have season 1 on youtube and i can't keep it synced i start getting ahead within a few seconds. tried it on the BBC I player with a VPN and same thing. I was looking forward to watching this reaction but it unsyncs so fast it's pretty much unwatchable for me :( none of the other shows on this channel have that problem so i don't think its a recording issue.

Yea, someone else just brought this to my attention. Sorry about this! There must be some difference between the playback of the streaming version and the disc version. I'm wondering if the disc was originally converted for playback in American disc players or something. Apparently the second episode was fine and the third was out of sync again. I'm hoping to find a solution, but I'm at a loss at the moment.

yeah i looked into it further, apparently the bbc version (and apparently all shows on BBC possibly?) are sped up 4% i guess youtube is also using this version. i guess the HBO version should be fine since most people don't seem to be having this issue unfortunately HBO max isn't available in Canada. it should be coming to disney + in Canada pretty soon and hopefully that will be the same version as is on HBO max. I'll just wait a few weeks and hope that version works.

That's so interesting! I was looking at the time stamps on Amazon compared to my blu ray and most of them were a good minute or two shorter than mine, so I assume it's most streaming platforms. Season two. appeared to have the same time. Hopefully that' the case. Thanks for bringing that info.

Glad i finally found a great Doctor Who Reaction, I hope you will have as much fun with the rest of the show as I had when watching it for the first time.
