Heyyy everyone~!!

Over time I’ve gathered various small tips and tricks regarding art and Webtoons and I thought I’d post some of them here for you all! 😌❤️

So let’s get into it~!

Tip number 1:

✨ 3D models ✨

3D models are tools meant to help artists work faster and more efficiently. They are definitely a must, especially if one is struggling with anatomy or is making a Webtoon.

However, one shouldn‘t rely solely on 3D models and should also find various references on what they want to draw if they really wanna see their art improving~ 😌

3D models on clip studio:

For those who use clip studio, the 3D models are integrated on the program which makes them very convenient to use!

I‘d suggest to go to the “clip studio assets“ and download lots of poses you think will be found handy and then edit them according to your wishes!

3D models without clip studio:

After having downloaded and tested out almost all the 3D modelling apps out there, I can say that the best one is “Magic Poser”. It’s very user friendly and allows a certain degree of customisation on the 3D models it provides.

Tip number 2:

✨ Colorful lineart ✨

This is more of an “extra”, optional kinda thing, for those of you who feel like they could give their illustrations a sort of boost.

Basically what this tip is about, is to alter the color of the lines used depending on the color that fills the lines.

In the following example, you can see the difference that lineart with color variations makes:

If you wanna test it out yourself, you can either set your lineart layer on “alpha lock” and paint over the lines you wish to change, or create a clipping layer and paint over your lines (handy when working with vector layers)

Tip number 3:

✨Vector layers✨

In one phrase: unchanging quality with countless of adjustments.

Once you start using vector layers for your linear I’m confident you won’t be able to go back 👌

Pros: You can easily adjust, rotate, enlarge, shrink, thicken, widen vector layers as much as you like without seeing ANY effect on the quality. That’s because vectors are not lines which are occupying pixels but are actually mathematical equations

Cons: Not all drawing apps have them. You can’t “liquify” them, use alpha lock or paint bucket/ color on them. (if you wanna color them you can set them as “reference layers“ and then use a raster layer to apply the color).

Tip number 4:

✨For better lineart, don‘t ignore the width of your sketches✨

Ever had that problem where you have a sketch you’re very happy with, but then when you proceed with the lineart it suddenly turns out like: 💩?

If that hits close to home, keep on reading... 🤣

Well, turns out that -unless you have super shaky hands and the inking is all over the place- the problem lies with the WIDTH! 😀

Take this example of chibi Onyx, for example:

In the first panel I followed the width of my sketch more accurately so the final product looks a lot like my initial drawing.

However, in the second panel I totally ignored the width of my sketch, considering it “too messy” and “wide” and simply “corrected” the width with a thin one. As a result the drawing looks more flat and different from the og sketch. Also, some features like the head of the character become harder to be distinguished from the rest of the body.

When I started taking into account the actual width of my sketches my lineart improved so much.. And tbh I’m actually surprised I’ve never seen this tip anywhere else so far… You heard it here first! 😂

Tip number 5:

✨Line variation✨

A very basic tip that unfortunately is often overlooked.

Not much to say here, except that the lines are way better when their width varies in a drawing!

Here‘s the proof!

In the first picture you can see that there’s no variation in all the lines’ width. As a result, the final drawing looks flat and generally unappealing.

On th second picture you can see how much better the same drawing looks if there’s some line variations on it!

So next time you ink make sure to add both wider and thinner lines together for a more neat and detailed look!

Bonus tip- I’ve learnt this one pretty recently but for the 3D models in clip studio paint, if you want to get more fluid, dynamic and less stiff poses, you can go to a 3D model’s Sub tool Details, click on “Pose” and uncheck the box that says “Joint angle limit”

Hope you found these tips useful!! Did you learn anything new? Tell me in the comments! 😌  If you’re interested in more small tips like these, I could do a part 2 with more of them in the future~ ❤️

See you all! ❤️
