Epic announcement: I'm using a new engine! Thanks to the release of Blender 2.8, I will from now on be rendering my animations with the real time engine Eevee, instead of Cycles.
Eevee is big news for Blender, because previously, your only choice of engine was either Cycles or Blender Internal (which is horrible). Cycles was the clear choice, and it's what all other Blender artists are using, but it had a major downside of being super slow to work with, since it's a ray tracer. Of course, this means more photo realism, but often the scenes people work with (myself included) are too simple to really take advantage of the ray tracing capabilities.
Enter Eevee. An alternative to Cycles, that in many ways works similarly to Unreal Engine. The most important thing to note about Eevee, is the fact that it's able to render your scene in real time. This means rendering from this point forward, will no longer be a 20-hour process (if not more), but can instead be done in minutes.
The downside is that the images Eevee produces, aren't ray traced, thus making it harder to achieve that photo realistic look, but the trade-off is real time rendering, and I'd say it's definitely worth the compromise, because in the end, Eevee still looks stunning.
Here are some other scenes I made with Eevee, as part of my learning process:
Of course, learning a new engine is no small task, so this Pharah animation ended up getting delayed, but I hope you'll enjoy it!
