[Full Reaction] Sabrina (1995)

Comments

Ted Little

Perhaps the greatest difference between this, admittedly enjoyable film, and the original is that in the earlier movie the three leads had four Academy Awards between them. Harrison Ford is a fine actor and the other are more than competent, but they cannot compare to the fire power of Bogart, Hepburn, and Holden. Its the all star team.

Keith Jones

Finally saw this, I think it didn't hurt the original (my fear with remakes) but I have to say the camera she uses is an Olympus OM4Ti perhaps my favorite 35mm camera ever, and probably the most underappreciated camera ever, oh the images I made with it, may be time to bench the digital camera and shoot some film with my true love again

Constantine

One of my favorites. Watch it every couple of months. Like always, I think John Williams' score was the finishing touch. I'm still looking for the sheet music to "How can I remember" so I can sing it for something, sadly it's never been published.

Zane From Canada

Glad you liked it. I hope you decide to watch the original Sabrina in future. Audrey Hepburn is such a vision. 😍 💖

Robert da Spruce

When it comes to whether you’ll like a movie or not. I believe this is what we call a “Slam Dunk”! 😀 Glad you enjoyed it. I’m looking forward to watching your reaction!

Cole Jennett

You did Scent of a Woman in May, so I really don’t think you skipped it😊

Joe

I really have a hard time accepting Ford in romances and comedy films, I always see him as an action star.

Rue

Julia Ormond is just an angel, okay?

Steven Ashford

Of course we knew you would love this one. Julia Ormond has such a soft beauty about her. Not sure how to articulate it. And such a soothing voice.

Tim Raths

Glad you liked it but the 1954 film with Humphrey Bogart and Audrey Hepburn is still the superior version.

Sahitya

Nice, could use a good breezy RomCom right now

Christopher Smith

Lots of love for The Ford and Julia for sure, but how 'bout some kudos for Greg Kinnear for walking a tight rope with playing that character.

Cole Jennett

“You don’t deserve her” “I don’t…I know that…but I need her…and I don’t need anything.” ❤️😭

Ike

I think this version is better than the Bogey and Audrey Hepburn version. “What was Linus like when he was a child?” Shorter.

Mike LL

Great to see you enjoy yourself during a movie that you really loved. Magical reaction.

Andrew Rose

I've always loved this movie.. so glad you loved it too!!

Alex Gorell

I hope you get around to watch the original one, its better.

Joseph Tamburo

Always preferred the original. Glad you enjoyed this one.

Jyn Jilly

I prefer this one to the original. Maybe because I like Harrison Ford and Julia Ormond.

Carol_White

This movie might have worked if it hadn't starred a block of wood named Harrison Ford.

John Drake

That's the kind of film I would normally never have any interest in seeing but I liked it, especially in the company of Madame de Popcorn. Sometimes we take Cassie to the movies, other times she takes us !

Robert da Spruce

Before I say anything about the reaction, I just wanted to say you look very nice in your gingham dress Cassie! As far as the movie goes, great reaction! It’s been a while since I’ve seen you enjoy a movie so much. Watching along with you put a smile on my face. 😊 Bring on Goodfellas!

David Freese

Ok. Cassie it's official. I you have soften me to the point that I can watch a rom- com without feeling that I'm a wuss. Alot of my viewing habits have changed because of you. I could watch you watch Harrison Ford reading a book at this point. Do watch the original when you can cause I watched both and loved them. Wonderful reaction made my day. 😆

I had only a vague notion that it was a remake when I first saw SABRINA, but otherwise knew nothing about it, so I went in totally cold (like you).and was utterly charmed. It's enchanting. The cinematography by Giuseppe Rotunno is lovely (so crisp, so vibrant, so colorful), the locations are gorgeous (particularly Martha's vineyard and Paris, France which director Sydney Pollack makes look like the ultimate romantic destination; Pollack does for Paris here what Woody Allen did for New York) and John Williams' Oscar-nominated score is superb and lends a real air of class to the whole affair. Some say Ford is stiff as Linus (a criticism that, interestingly, was also leveled at Humphrey Bogart's portrayal in the original), but I think he acquits himself admirably playing a different sort of character than he is known for. Ormond is beautiful, elegant and vulnerable. Kinnear does a fine job in an early role in his career and the rest of the cast is terrific (John Wood, Richard Crenna, Angie Dickinson, Lauren Holly, Dana ivy, Fanny Ardant and I saw you spotted a young Paul Giamatti as well). Cinephiles like to talk a lot about which remakes are superior to their originals and the standard titles always get mentioned (THE THING, THE FLY, TRUE GRIT, etc), but we don't often hear about those remakes that while they may not surpass their predecessors are still very, very good in their own right. I do think Billy Wilder's 1954 SABRINA is the better movie, but this is still a perfectly acceptable version. I recommend checking out the original at some point because I think you will enjoy that too (maybe not more than this one since this interpretation has more modern sensibilities, but that's fine) and you might actually be surprised how much this film retains from the Wilder movie (not just the story but the dialogue, certain gags and sometimes even identical shots/angles). At the very least one thing that is inarguably better in the original is Sabrina herself. I love Julia Ormond, but whatever style, grace, poise and beauty she possesses in spades, Audrey has more. I'm telling you, she was truly something special. So glad you enjoyed it. I knew you would. :)

Cole Jennett

I just think the humour is so good in it. It baffles me that it’s only a 6.3 on IMDb, but I suspect it got a lot of low ratings from those that loved the original. I think it stands on its own as a great comedy, but also really enjoy the love story. It can’t think of a way to improve it personally. Top 5 favourite for sure.

Stick Figure Studios

I've watched this film probably 20 times at least and yet something that didn't occur to me until just this viewing was that Linus tells David early in the film "you don't deserve her" referring to Elizabeth and yet at the end of the film he's being told "you don't deserve her" about Sabrina by her father.

Cole Jennett

I’m sure you noticed it, but I also like that when she thinks she’s talking to David in his bedroom she says “I know you better then anyone else”, and Linus at the end says she “knows him better then anyone else”❤️

James

"Sabrina" was Audrey Hepburn's second major picture and she co-starred with Humphrey Bogart. May I recommend Miss Hepburn's first movie, "Roman Holiday" with Gregory Peck. It is shot mostly on location in Rome and she is entirely delightful and Mr. Peck is a standout and the two are perfectly matched. The studio originally wanted to put Gregory's name at the top of the credit card, but he told them if they did, they would look silly because Miss Hepburn's performance was that good. She won the Best Actress award that year for her work in the picture.

Stick Figure Studios

ROMAN HOLIDAY is a delight. She did a lot of movies, but ROMAN HOLIDAY, SABRINA and BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S are like her "Holy Trinity."

Stick Figure Studios

Also, I have to admit that I am extremely curious what that ad was that Amazon Prime decided to play before the movie. That was quite the visceral reaction you had to it. :-)

Jason Dolan

Other good movies directed by Sydney Pollack include: Out of Africa The Firm Tootsie Jeremiah Johnson Absence of Malice Three Days of the Condor The Way We Were Lots of Robert Redford collabs

Robert da Spruce

I’m not 100% sure, but I also watched on Amazon. And they showed a trailer for a series called “Evil” on Paramount Plus. I believe that’s what Cassie saw as well. Because she said “we will not be watching Evil” or something to that effect.

Stick Figure Studios

Ah, that makes sense. I've caught that ad before too. I can see why Cassie reacted that way. I thought she was just calling the show evil, but that was it what it was actually called. :-D

Celeste McAllister

Wait till you see Audrey Hepburn play Sabrina,or any of the women she portrayed in her long storied career,I loved the location shots on Martha's Vineyard I could recognize many of the locations for Jaws...the window of the summer house used to be Quints wherehouse, the boat house and the Orcas dock down below on the right hand side..the donated half way house was the Amity town hall in Jaws..Sweet chic flic I really enjoyed the ending it had a lovely feeling of Linus being redeemed finding his long lost heart givin to Sabrina a stunning beauty half his age..Paris and the French Riviera (To Catch a Thief) or definitely on my bucket list..A crush box? I still have a bunch of movie & concert tickets even a speeding ticket from ten plus years back..I loved your blouse/dress Cassie very cute!..everyone have a sunny Sunday, see ya! 🌞

My_Cousin_Mose

I've never heard of this movie and just looking at the thumbnail I'm sure this one is NOT up my alley. Glad you liked it though Cassie.

Philip G.

Something I'd never watch on my own but I'm committed to watch whatever you watch and also expand my movie horizons

Stick Figure Studios

You're probably thinking of her final film: Steven Spielberg's ALWAYS. She could be an angel, she could be God, she could be another dead person there to guide this newly dead person. The precise nature of her character (named Hap) in that film is actually left ambiguous.

Stick Figure Studios

Another thing I missed. Good catch. I do like the callbacks in that final scene to their early encounter (like his "you said if there was anything you could ever do...").

G

That's great to hear, Phillip. Some of our fellow patrons want Cassie to get out of her comfort zone and expand her film horizon but won't go out of their own comfort zone. I say life is short. There are so many good films out there. Watch and enjoy them while we can.

Shawn Kildal

Glad you liked the music. It was from a relatively unknown gentleman by the name of John Williams. He did a few small films like Jaws, the Star Wars sage, Indiana Jones franchise, E.T., Jurassic Park films, Home Alone, Schindler's List, Harry Potter, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and my favorite, Superman the Movie. He's done so many more, but I these are what he's best known for. A somewhat relatively known fact is one of his sons, Joseph, is a lead singer in the 80s group rock band Toto. The band that did the songs "Africa", Rosanna" and "I'll be over you" among many others.

Shawn Kildal

I wonder how Julia Ormond missed out on Sandra Bullock's role in While You Were Sleeping. That part was tailor made for her

Cole Jennett

I love Julia Ormond, but couldn’t imagine anyone else but Sandy playing that role now. It’s my favourite of all her movies😊

Shawn Kildal

True. But nobody does the falling in love with different brothers better in movies quite like Julia

Rosanne Stewart

I love this remake so much more than the original. Audrey Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart are cinematic icons, but they had zero romantic chemistry.

George Stapp

I absolutely knew without a doubt that you would love this movie! The original is good! Different, but very good! As much as I love Audrey Hepburn, this one is and will always be my favorite!

Stick Figure Studios

It's one of my favorite scores of his. Unusual for him, but shows his range. Lovely, classy, elegant. Definitely deserved the Oscar nomination it received.

Ginko

Glad you enjoyed it. I also thought it was entertaining, but the story doesn't really fit the 90s. The characters therefore also felt a little out of place to me. Nancy Marchand was great though. The original had something magical about it and Audrey Hepburn is obviously a big part of that. I hope you will watch it, even if it's not a reaction. Or maybe just as a patreon exclusive.

Celeste McAllister

Sandra Bullock was a bigger box office draw,Julia Ormond would have been the better choice..

Jason Dolan

I was only listing movies directed by Sydney Pollack but A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT is a great movie.

Caomhan84

This is the first time I've seen this movie, even though I always meant to watch it. Harrison Ford did a few romantic movies in the 90's...I think this one is the most famous. Six Days Seven Nights is more of an action comedy but I like it too. Side note, though....why is Indiana Jones peeking out from behind the couch? Hahaha :)

Jason Chirevas

Watching this movie along with Cassie — my first time seeing it too — one thought occurred to me again and again… Cassie, there are DECADES of classic Hollywood romances out there waiting for you to get lost in them. Cary Grant is out there. William Holden and Clark Gable are out there. Robert Taylor is out there. Audrey Hepburn, Katherine Hepburn, Norma Shearer, Lauren Bacall, Gene Tierney; all out there. Also, Bogart and Bergman are waiting for you to return to CASABLANCA. Watch it on your own this time. Not to take anything away from this SABRINA, it was pleasant enough, but I couldn’t help think, watching Cassie react the way she did to it, how much real, classic Hollywood magic would transport her the way it has so many of us for so long. I hope that’s a journey you take, Cassie, and soon. With or without us.

Alex Villarreal

So glad Cassie got around to this one. Harrison Ford pulls off a sharp, sleek look with his suit and glasses. My mom got a crush on Ford based on this movie. She wasn't a big fan of the rough-and-tumble Indiana Jones persona, but she could get behind a suave Harrison Ford.

Melinda Sandstedt

You should definitely check out the original with Audrey Hepburn

brooke atkins

Can’t see anyone but Sandra in while you were sleeping. Would hate to see anyone else in that movie. Julia is great but I’m a bigger sandy fan. She can really do it all. Is a time to kill still coming? It was suppose to be this month but obviously that’s not gonna happen. I really want her to watch that one. Haven’t been interested in any uploads since speed. The mafia movies and romcoms just don’t do it for me. But to each his own.

Cole Jennett

@brooke atkins I did say While you were Sleeping was my favourite Sandy Bullock movie, but the “best” in my imo is A Time to Kill. Still hoping it’s coming soon as well!

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

I had never seen this one before. I tried it... but gave up after about 30 mins. Good heavens that was dull :( Some suggestions for novel rom-coms that are a little more zesty: The Trotsky (2009) - Canadian film! and Once (2007) - Irish film!

3dbadboy1

Oh yea, Three Days of the Condor, the mystery, the intrigue. I always felt it had a European feel to it. Jeremiah Johnson as well, of course, superb.

Godzilla Jones

"May your first child be a masculine child" is a quote from The Godfather

Vryce

How about Always, Notting Hill or Under the Tuscan Sun; a bit of variety, granted.

Larry Darrell

We Need More of This!! Comedies & Romances. I like watching someone be happy. Recommendations: Tootsie (1982) also directed by Sydney Pollack Working Girl (1988) also starring Harrison Ford Juliet, Naked (2018) Also, in different genres: Finding Oneself in Paris film: The Razor's Edge (1946) Sydney Pollack directed Romances: Out of Africa (1985), Random Hearts (1999) Harrison Ford mentionables: Hanover Street (1979), Witness (1985), Frantic (1988), Presumed Innocent (1990), Six Days, Seven Nights (1998)

natalie St Clair

poor remake! Need to watch the original with Audrey Hepburn!

David Collins

I personally think Six Days, Seven Nights is hands down Harrison Ford's best RomCom.

Andrew Rose

I still watch this all the time.. loved your reaction. Right now I just finished this after watching your reaction to The Crow.. needed a little light to counter the dark. Thank you for making this something that makes me smile.

Rick Williams

Great Reaction. Fun movie. Normally not the kind of movie I would go out of my way to watch. But, you made it fun.
