It was one of these very calm days on the water and we had only just left Gibraltar on our first long sail to Malta. There was absolutely no wind in sight, but the forecast predicted it would pick up soon.

So, we decided to just drift along and wait, taking in the scenery and enjoying the silence.

There, drifting on the water, I thought about my time growing up in Germany – far away from the coast. If someone would have told me back then, that one day I would be living a nomadic life on the water, I would have not believed it. The whole idea of this lifestyle still felt rather outlandish, even now when we had already moved onto SV CUBA and were on route to an island we never visited before.

And during our long preparation and planning many voices told us we were crazy. Why live a hard life in the elements, full of challenges dangers and difficulties?

They were not wrong though. We usually don’t go to marinas and hardly stay longer in one anchorage than a week or two. Sometimes we move around daily just to avoid bad weather or simply to explore a new area.

The days are long as there is always more to fix than can be repaired on a boat. Sometimes we spent an entire day just to find a place to get provisions, refill our cooking gas or water tanks.

The resources on our tiny home are very limited so we have to be frugal and always on top of how much water or fuel we use just to stay safe.

Yes, it is challenging but we learn something new every day.

We have to step out of our comfort zone. And sailing can often be scary and uncomfortable. We live every day not knowing what the next will bring, and sometimes we might not even know where we will be tomorrow.

But we chose this path, and we try to overcome these challenges everyday – it gives us a sense of real accomplishment. And because we share our story, we never feel that we are doing this alone.

Maybe we even inspire someone to follow their path, even if it might be an unconventional one.
