Yes, I get to flex my botanical knowledge! The treatment for malaria does indeed come from a plant, a South American tree species of the genus Cinchona. It contains the alkaloid quinine, which can help fight off malarial infection. It was called Jesuits bark because, according to colonialist history, the Jesuits "discovered" this treatment. In fact, the Indigenous peoples of Peru taught them how they use plants to treat certain ailments. Has Dave done an episode on the Jesuits yet?
