I love the mail bag videos!! We get everything from Johnny Carson to duck wieners to Garett’s excellent advice about focusing on things around you (within your control) and less on the broader news (outside of your control). ☺️ Hank Green narrates one of my favorite science YouTube channels, Journey to the Microcosmos. It shows microorganisms under a high quality microscope. I might have done better in biology if I’d seen stuff like this as a kid. 😁 Here’s a link to one of the episodes: https://youtu.be/U3PLUeD_JAg

Convoluted Vaginas would be a good name for a Scissor Sisters cover band.

I recently joined the Patreon and going through all these extra videos is reaffirming, but tough.😅 I at least can take solace with Jose chilling in the background.

The Department of Energy is working on consent based siting for the nuclear waste. What are your thoughts on that?

Hank is one of the good ones; I love how much kindness him and John are spreading and how they managed to translate their love for nerdy stuff into all those educational projects. I just saw John's video on the maternity center in Sierra Leone they're helping to build with all the money they've raised through P4A, Awesome Socks Club and the likes. It's pretty amazing. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=yA3QKEmAULQ

Mail bag question for ya, when are y’all recording that Steven Seagal movie commentary? It’s gonna be epic and I need it

Fucking histamine intolerance – I could really use a drink now. 😵‍💫🙇‍♀️ You're totally right though, Gareth. Focussing on the small things around ourselves that we actually CAN influence, really helps a lot. It might not amount to much in the overall scheme of things, but it goes a long way on an individual level. Even small acts of kindness might make another person's day or save a tiny critter's life. And that's something we all can do.

Big fan of José-cam 👍

I miss the days of old school Colbert and The Daily Show, those two radicalized baby high school me and now it feels like they both got soft

I’d never watched anything from their vlogbrothers channel before. That maternity center really is amazing. It’s beautiful to see people using their influence to bring people together and harness their collective power to make a real meaningful difference. I’m glad you shared that link. 😊

..I think the background-thought about climate change is a kind of "..well, surely it will work out in the end, like if this was a movie. We're in the bad part now, but that's mostly tolerable because we know that modern story-conventions has this natural flow of bad times getting exchanged with an uptick into good times". It's one of the reasons why "fatalistic"/doomer-responses get so critized. It's sorta baked into the original question that there is a "..well, surely it will work out in the end?" aspect when you ask the question, and it's really unpleasant to get a (pretty sober) observation that the current system has to tire itself out, for something new to happen, and while that is happening, no meaningful change will happen, and a lot of time and damage will have passed.

Oh, and Dave – since you mentioned the recent Covid outbreak at the Giro d'Italia: there's indeed been a bunch of professional cyclists whose careers have been cut short or at least severly damaged by them catching the virus. Most prominent case might be Sonny Colbrelli, who won Paris– Roubaix (one of the hardest one-day races in pro-cycling and his biggest win) in the fall of 2021, then suffered an almost fatal cardiac arrest on the finish line of another race just six months later and had to end his career at the height of his success. Even though there's no direct proof that this was linked to his Covid infection earlier that year (cases of sudden cardiac arrest aren't that rare among pro cyclists), it seems more than likely. That's why the team manager of Remco Evenepoel, the guy who had to abandon the current Giro while in the lead due to a positive Covid test, isn't taking any chances with his riders. (Good on him, even though he can be quite problematic at times.) Another famous rider, Peter Sagan, who dominated the World Championships and Spring Classics for years, is a mere shadow of his former self. This might be due to his age, but I strongly suspect his three (or more) Covid infections played a role in this, too. And these cases really are just the tip of the iceberg. If people were to look a bit more closely, this sport could serve as a good example for what Covid can do to a healthy individual.

How can you give content for something that will affect generations well after you are dead?

Alanna

The Daily Show maybe, but Jon Stewart hasn’t really. Except his show is on AppleTV (though chunks of it are accessible on YouTube).

That's definitely in the chamber, for perhaps a less hectic time. Editor x
