Love the idea of being able to buy a signed script. Thanks to the person who asked that question

Thanks for answering! Personal request for The Tank Chase as an option for signed script!

Hey, anyone got a link to Dave telling the "argh I'm a pirate" story?

Here is a great video taking down the Steven Pinker 'Everything is getting better' bullshit. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=zwXV71hF7cs

I don’t seem to have had the pleasure to see the chollop about the queen in my feed. Am I the only one?

Sara

I’d love a script for Boston Corbett or the 1908 New York to Paris car race

Sara

I had to miss the Seattle show because I had covid. So, you’re welcome, everyone I didn’t infect. I hope they eventually release that one.

Here's a blog post as well. https://www.nakedcapitalism.com/2022/09/free-market-genocides-the-real-history-of-trade.html

I feel like I’ve missed some episodes somewhere based on this convo.

You also have to look at the levels that they use for measuring poverty as it was for a long time 1.50 a day (iirc). Then on top of that folks like Pinker (who I feel obligated to say had a pretty long term connection to the talented Mr. Epstein) who do push this stuff also like to chalk it up to "Western democratic capitalism" when the vast majority of poverty alleviation has been in China. Well is China a communist hellhole or a state capitalist juggernaut of impending doom (ie. Yellow peril)? The actual political economy of China has changed a considerable amount since Mao and particularly since Deng so I'm not gonna get into it here (you can read their 5-year plans online in English or read about Socialism with Chinese Characteristics) but suffice to say the reality of the country completely throws a wrench into the aforementioned claims. China also practices debt forgiveness or loan renegotiation which the IMF/World Bank/US have rarely done and the Belt and Road initiative is liable to do more for people in lesser developed nations than centuries of colonialism and neo-colonialism has done (not to say that China is perfect but I mean look at the pandemic handling in comparison to the enlightened west for just one example). If anything my optimism for change comes from the fact the current system is so unstable and unsustainable that the realities of life outside the imperial core are startingto drift inwards (ie. microloans for gas and groceries), and while there are those who may never see the light, I tend to think that the old Upton Sinclair adage about a man never learning what his paycheck requires him not to learn is more applicable than sheer stupidity (if anything I argue that's closer to a eugenics framing because eliminating the stupids fixes everything right?). American propaganda is really good and there's a reason the government corporate fascist nexus has to use so much of it internationally but especially domestically; you can only hide the rot under a fresh coat of paint and the shit under the rug for so long before folks clue in even if some require it to be in their face. Also look how popular stuff like Medicare for all, 15$ min wage (should ~35$ if it kept up with productivity), abortion, military restraint, expanded voting rights, etc. is when separated from the undemocratic voting system and the bs spectacle; it's not the common people but those running the system with like 16% approval that are interfering with progress and are pushing things towards eventual revolution if they don't allow for an off ramp electorally or via reform. Note: second half is more in response to the pessimism represented in the Q and A towards change or at least the reasons why it hasn't happened yet which I agree on to an extent but think are more of a ruling class inertia issue than everyone else's fault.

For the person who was asking about Grant bios, I think you have to go with Grant's own memoirs which are quite good from what I've seen of them and pretty easy to read. There are some others like American Ulysses I've heard some praise for but can't confirm personally. The issue with Grant is that he was kind of an outsider at West Point and wasn't into the pomp and circumstance that other generals like McClellan were as they mostly came from ruling class families with a military dynasty. As such when the war broke out most of the Union command was looking to reach a negotiated settlement with no abolition and even reparations to the South which folks like Lincoln, Grant, and even Sherman to an extent couldn't continence. Hence why Lincoln eventually replaced McClellan with Grant as he was actually willing to fight and persist through the mountain of corpses the war inevitably had to entail. Thus I speculate a lot of the talk of Grant being a drunk doesn't seem to come from well sourced info but slander that came from other officers trying to pollute the historical record. Two books that get into the McClellan issue are McClellan The Young Napoleon, and McClellan's Other Story which should actually help dispel a lot of the mythos around the Civil War (the latter even makes a convincing case that McClellan even used one of his staff to give plans to the Confederates in order to push a brokered peace favoring the South; all as a ploy to maintain elite economic power across the country). As such the myths of a drunk Grant or a depraved and brutal Sherman (who was I would argue far too restrained even in his Marc to the Sea what with many of the plantation aristocrats still around after the war) helped reconcile the country in many not good ways following Reconstruction as the Robber Barons and Republican elite just wanted to do some more capitalism and get right into offshoring colonialism.

I was in the highest of your Patreon tiers for MONTHS and just couldn’t afford for the little that was being promised and not given (with the little income I have). You guys are great, and I’m gonna keep giving, but my ex who loves baseball got the default Rube script (sadly), and that’s the way it goes.

I missed it too and I was soooooo excited to go. I hope the audio and video is released!

Did you have front row seats? Cause there were 2 seats to my left at the Seattle show!

Sara

No, i had pretty good seats though, like center of row G. So I was really afraid I’d be a super spreader and that I would get poor Gary and Dave sick and then they’d never come back to Seattle again and you’d all be really mad at me

I think I'd like to be in the room where the USSR and Pepsi were negotiating the sale of their navy. I have to know who proposed the idea of Pepsi Co owning a whole navy, and who took it seriously enough to go through with it
