I read a lot about the Vietnam War and My Lai but didn’t remember Colin Powell being involved. Anyone who had anything to do with My Lai is a literal fucking monster. No one was held accountable for it. Thank you Dave tor bringing it back to our attention.

Yeah, as Lucas noted further up, it’s pronounced ‘Mee-lie’. I visited My Lai back in 2010 or thereabouts. It’s a beautiful hamlet, has a really powerful museum commemorating the events. Never have I been so disturbed as when I walked around seeing the signs on various rice paddies indicating how many bodies were deposited in each field. Same with the irrigation ditches. I’ve visited various places where war has been, but nothing comes close to the fucking barbarity and insanity of My Lai. As for the helicopter, yes the pilot and his gunners saved 5-10 villagers by physically opposing fellow Americans, which is impressive to say the least. More incredible? Those villagers shared no common language with the Americans. They had no idea if they were being helped or if the plan was to fly them out above the ocean and push them out. The courage and faith of those villagers to get on that helicopter, hey? Long post - fuck you, Colin Powell.
