The adventure lore elaborates on the current tribute arrangement between a farming settlement and the eye monster that secretly claims the region its realm. While this situation is not ideal, it continued for years with apparent peace until the beholder had a powerful dream and became an undead monster.

After that it became a very real threat to the balance of the kingdom. This adventure idea is appropriate for high level parties but the lore can help fuel foreshadowing of the events for lower level parties.
