“I feel like I have asked this exact question like ten times already, but…” Laren asked, kicking a stone away from their camp as he crossed his arms in boredom. “...why am I even here?”

Anna sighed at the question, putting the boards with her documentations aside as she left her head hanging. Maybe this was a bad idea. Maybe she shouldn’t have taken Laren along. Maybe she should start questioning all of her bad life choices.

But no, she pushed through, flashing Laren a weak smile as she answered. “It’s for a great mother-son experience. I get to conduct my work and research here, and you get to spend some time with me. Isn’t that wonderful?”

“Mom. We are in the middle of nowhere. The only thing near us is your dumb ruins and all you do is make notes on your paper. You don’t even try to take anything valuable home. This has been the most boring 3 days of my life so far.” Laren huffed, then turned away from Anna and towards the ruins. “Why couldn’t you just let me stay at home?”

“I… uhm… You have kinda blown that chance, you know?” Anna replied, trying to sound stern. “Last month you have proven to me that you are not ready yet to stay home alone. So I have to put up measures.”

“But I am 17 mom!”

“And I am 40. Glad we straightened that out.” Anna replied quickly, crossing her arms beneath her chest. Although Laren just scoffed at her.

“You are still mad about that?” He asked, rolling his eyes.

“Yes, yes I am.” Anna tried to look intimidating, although that was her one big flaw. She was really bad at being stern, so she just tried her best. “When I tell you to not invite those thug friends, not smoke with them on the balcony, not drink alcohol and to please keep the house clean, and then after I come home the first thing I have to do is clean up cigarette stumps and whisky bottles from the balcony, then you should have known that I don’t let you home alone again. You know I can look past it a few times, but you really went overboard, don’t you think?”

“Whatever.” Laren rolled his eyes. And while it was very obvious that he still didn't take Anna all too seriously, she was at least happy she managed to end the conversation. Because as bad as she tried to sound right now, she was really, really, really uncomfortable talking about this sort of thing.

“When are we going to the ruins today?” Laren suddenly asked, surprising Anna a little bit with his sudden interest.

“I have done my reports and my checks for today, so we are ready to go whenever. Just stick close to me again.” Anna spoke, smiling a bit as maybe the bad air between them was finally gone. “It’ll be fun, I promise.”

“Yeah, I don't know about that.” He quickly replied, putting his arms behind his head. “I plan on doing some ‘exploring’ today too.”

Anna just blinked. She had a bit of a bad feeling about it, but she decided not to inquire further. The ruins were largely explored and mapped already anyway, so it wouldn't hurt to have Laren have a crack at it as well, right?

It's been an hour since the two of them had entered the ruins once again. Laren has disappeared from Anna's side pretty much the moment they entered the place, to which Anna was actually kind of relieved. Usually he would sit next to her and be someone difficult and bored, but now she was at least somewhat to herself. Which she actually kinda was happy for.

Because the ruin she was in currently was actually what’s now known as the Ancient Dragon Castle, which is just shrouded in all sorts of mystery. Even in these modern times, this place seemingly popped out of nowhere, although when it appeared, it was already in complete ruin. Scientists don't really have an explanation for that and it is also precisely what Anna’s job was to find out.

And she really loved her job. She had always been very curious and thorough when it comes to research, be that theoretical or practical. And she had already made a few discoveries that she was very proud of herself. Like she had found mentions in ancient texts that this place might have been called Ruby life shrine at some point in the past.

While she wouldn't call herself lofty enough to believe that actual dragons lived here at some point, she did in fact find traces of some truly large creatures inside of these ruins. Meaning something big must have lived here in ancient times. And that’s just the kind of thing that Anna lived for.

Right now she stood in front of probably the most interesting structure of the entire ruins. Instead of a throne room or something else you would expect inside a castle, it instead looked like a broken down shrine with a huge destroyed statue in the middle. It was a statue of a woman, although her head was missing and even most of her body was left up to interpretation and speculation. Though what was apparent that it was surrounded by small dragon-like creatures, since more than one of those small statues were still fully intact.

“Truly fascinating…” She let out as Anna stood in awe in front of the statue again, taking in the grandeur of it once again. She had made rough sketches of it already, and even some 3D models on her laptop, but nothing tops seeing the actual thing in person. Just looking at it filled her with determination to find out who that person was that the statue represented.

“Mom. Are you done staring yet?” A voice rang out behind Anna, snapping her back to reality. For some reason she was quite surprised to see that Laren had just appeared behind her like that, although she wasn’t quite sure who else she was expecting in the Ancient Dragon Castle. “Feels like you have looked at this broken thing from every angle already and still find new ways to look at it.”

Anna turned around and gave an embarrassed smile. “Well, I am researching its past significance. And from what I found it's actually really interesting, as…”

“Not this again… Mom, I told you I don't want a history lesson everytime we speak.” Laren interrupted her, making her turn towards the ground, defeated. His expression however quickly changed when he took a few steps forwards, making Anna look up at him again. “But never mind that. Check this out!”

And with that, he pulled out what looked like a golden red metallic looking egg from behind him and presented it proudly to Anna, who just looked shocked by his find. Questions immediately started to race through her head.

Where did he find that?
What was that?
And most importantly: How did she miss something like that?

“T-That’s amazing! I didn’t know you had such a neck for exploration! If we bring that back, I am sure…” Anna was ecstatic about the find, Laren however…

“Yeah… not happening.” He answered quickly.

“Huh?”

“I mean, think about it. What sane person would give this thing into some sort of research facility. I am not that stupid to just hand this over for free.” He announced proudly tossing the metal egg up and catching it again. “Ben actually has a lot of connections and I am sure he can sell anything in no time at all.”

“Wait…! You can’t…!” Anna stepped forward, horrified at her son's declaration.

“Why not? I found it so it's my decision what I'll do with it, right?”

She had to speak up. There was surely something important about this egg, something that made it feel like it's the key to this ruin… to this castle, yet…

her voice was stuck. She didn't know what to say. Or how to say it.

She had to be assertive, even just this once.

“N-NO! T-This artifact was found during our expedition and therefore n-needs to be examined by the expedition leader and expert first. N-Now hand this over before you hurt yourself or damage it!” Anna spoke with the sternest voice she could muster. She was pointing at Laren with her finger, but her entire arm was shaking. She really looked like a stuttering mess right then, but she needed to pull herself together.

Hearing his mothers words, Laren immediately looked disappointed. However a wicked smile crept onto his face which looked unreadable to Anna as he replied. “... Yeah, you are right. It’s definitely safer in your hands. Catch!”

And without warning Laren threw the egg full force towards Anna, who barely had time to react. Not to mention that she was inherently a lousy catcher, meaning it didn’t come as a surprise to Laren that the impacted with Anna’s chest, causing her to stumble backwards as he turned around. With the force Laren put into it, Anna could barely keep her footing, almost feeling like she was launched backwards against the broken statuary as she crumbled to the ground, the metal egg also landing on the floor.

“...I don’t understand why you are always so stuck up and against fun. But fine, if that thing means so much to you, you can have it. I’ll just find something else to sell. Tsk.”

There were a few moments of silence as Anna tried to orient herself, failing to move her legs well and with that failing to stand up. She reached backwards, trying to get back onto her feet, yet every time the pain in her chest tightened and she fell back down. Laren did neither say anything nor act on her attempts.

However the moment her fingertips made contact with the ancient statue, a surge of electric energy coursed through her entire being. The electricity was even visible across the broken statuary, giving it a strange glow that quickly shifted from a blue to a crimson red, making the entire thing look slightly ominous. Even Laren had to stare and take a step back at that scene unfolding in front of him.

“Mom…? Are you okay?” He finally asked, more out of shock than curiosity.

Anna didn’t answer, instead trying to figure out the feeling of that energy flowing inside of her. The pain in her chest was slowly getting better and she felt a lot more energized, for lack of a better word. She could feel sensation surging through her body, from her hands to her core to her feet and back to the tips of her fingers. Truly one of the strangest sensations she had ever felt.

Amidst the onslaught of sensations, her hands started to change, if only ever so slightly in the beginning. Dark scales started to manifest on the back of hands, spreading across her hands and fingers, creating an otherworldly pattern across her palms. And although Anna was looking directly at her changing hands she oddly felt no fear or worry. Somehow, this felt like a liberating change, as if she was slowly shedding her own weakness as more and more scales reveal themselves.

“I asked you something. Are you okay?” Laren repeated himself, however this time Anna answered almost immediately.

“I am doing just fine. But more importantly…” She declared, feeling another surge of energy blast through her body that simply wouldn’t let her sit on the floor anymore. So she lifted up one leg and sent it stomping on the floor, causing Anna to instantly stand up into an upright position while sending an earthquake through the entire ruins as red shockwaves emanate from her foot.

The entire ruins reacted to her stomp, walls shaking and ground rumbling, which caused Laren to take a few steps back in fear of his life. The ruins however, did not get destroyed, instead, the red bolts were now running all over the place, cleaning up and even repairing the old stones in front of his eyes. However the voice of his mother instantly caught his attention again as she continued with: “...can we talk about that throw again, Laren?”

Anna didn’t like confrontations. She really didn’t. But anyone could see that what Laren did was not okay and she felt obligated to make sure he knew that. Usually she felt weak and powerless to do something like that, but this time was different. The energy was still flowing through both her arms and legs, each limb feeling supercharged with strength she didn't even know she could have.

“You found a valuable item, then declared to sell it to some untrustworthy blackmarked ‘friend’ and finally threw it at me when I told you off. What do you have to say for yourself?” Taking a step forward, her feet also started to grow scales and change shape, pushing and ripping her shoes apart as they grew. Then her nails lengthened, both on her hands and feet, making her hands look alluring and dangerous while her feet now more so resembled paws of beasts than those of humans. All Laren did was stare in awe at what his mother was becoming.

“Well? I am waiting.” She said, only stopping to walk when she was barely a meter away from him anymore, crossing her arms under her bust while looking him into the eyes. Yet when Laren tried to figure out where to look, everything about her started to change again, from her eyes becoming a deep and burning orange and her bust increasing in front of his very eyes. Not to mention that this was truly the first time he ever was scared of his mother in his life.

“Well… you cut my pocket money the other day and… uhm…” Laren stammered, watching as his mother figuratively and literally grew in height in front of his very eyes. Where once he was much taller than her with his impressive 1,8 meter height, now the two of them were about equal in height, but Anna's presence made her feel so much bigger than him.

“A-And you constantly ban my friends from coming over…” Anna just continued to stare at Laren with an unimpressed look on her face. Her entire body seemed to youthen and blossom, with everything about her looking more impossibly perfect by the second. Her waist started to thin with any and all excess fat simply evaporating and making her already improved bust look all the more pronounced. Her hips began to widen while her thighs rose, flourishing like dough in an oven, which was just the tip of the iceberg of Anna’s increasingly beautiful body.

“And t-that's why… hey! Wait! Why do I even need to justify myself?!?” Laren suddenly sprouted, making Anna blink, then close her eyes as her ears started to shake from anger she had never felt before. She barely even felt her ears getting pulled farther apart and shaking more, as she did her best to not explode at her son out of anger right then and there. With her elf-like ears still twitching, she opened her eyes again.

“You brought me to this expedition against my will! And you were the one wasting a good opportunity to make a lot of money. Why am I the one…”

“YOUNG MAN! ON YOUR KNEES, NOW!” Anna bellowed through the halls, sending  shockwaves of energy through the entire ruin once again while all of her hair started to float from the sheer amount of power. From the root up, every strand of hair shifted from her boring brown to a fiery charged red, as if each was a battery overcharged to the brim at that very moment. Laren didn’t even notice that his legs had given out and he was staring at what literally felt like a real dragon from his knees at that moment.

“Stealing a dragon egg of any kind is a crime that could make that human the enemy of all dragons for the rest of their life! And by my will as sure as I am called Alextrassa, no son of mine shall ever even consider to take on a crime like that! Do you understand?!?” Anna declared, her presence so terrifying that Laren just panickingly nodded his head, before even thinking through what his mother had just said. However Anna was actually the one to notice the strangeness of her words first.

“My name is Alextrassa…? No, that can’t be right. My name is definitely Anna, no doubt about that. And what’s that about dragons…?” Anna started to wonder, taking a step back to ponder her own words. This gave Laren a moment to collect himself again and also think about the situation.

“T-This isn’t you mom! Y-You are clearly possessed or something by this Alex… something!” Laren yelped, pointing at the red haired lady in front of him. “Give me my mother back, you…”

“Don’t be stupid. No such thing happened.” Anna retorted flatly, not even paying much mind to the words of Laren. Instead she stepped towards the broken statue again, red energy coating her body as if she was channeling it. Then, with a touch of her hand on the statue, the broken pieces and rubble lying all around them started to move, then float until it started to rebuild itself.

From the bottom to the top, it looked like the statue built itself to be in the likeness of Anna new form, although she knew that wasn’t the case. She wasn’t recreating it. She was rebuilding it. Her body was changed to be in the likeness of the statuary, not the other way around. And now that she finally had the statuary in all its glory in front of her, everything just clicked into place for Anna.

“M-Mom… I-Is that really you…?” Laren stuttered.

“Alextrassa, mother of all dragons. It is not a name, it is a title given to those who are caretakers of the dragons and build the bridge between humans and dragon-kind.” Anna spoke out loud, making Laren blink. “It’s a spirit, a body and memories, all meant to be inherited by the worthy in line.”

There was a brief pause as Anna turned around, looking at Laren who could watch his mother and the statue behind her practically looking identically. With the only exception being their clothes. “The last mother of dragons suffered a great misfortune and it caused this sanctuary to collapse, yet her spirit prevailed. And now it's my turn.”

And with a huge and confident smile, she declared in front of Laren: “I am Alextrassa, mother of all dragons, now!”

“A-And what does that mean for us?” Laren asked, almost dreading the answer.

Alextrassa flicked her hair back and stomped on the ground again, sending another shockwave through the ruins that really don’t look like ruins anymore.

Neither of them had noticed until now, but practically every crack was fixed and every broken tile mended, so that now color could return to the place, making it look far more like a magical safe haven than whatever it looked like before. That's when Alextrassa picked up the egg again and showed it to Laren.

“Easy.” She said, as the egg started to glow. And after a second the golden egg started to crack in Alextrassa’s hand, slowly but surely hatching and revealing the head of a dragon hatchling on the inside, the sight of which made Alextrassa smile lovingly. “I am going to rebuild my dragon empire and YOU are going to help me with it. Because Mama is going to hatch a lot of brothers and sisters for you soon~”

“B-Brothers and… you want me to become…?” Laren stuttered to which Alextrassa interrupted him by laughing.

“And I expect you to be a good big brother to them. Now then, follow me!” She declared, heading through a door that was previously blocked off by the rubble and laughed. “I want to see of my armor from all those years ago still fits an old lady like me~”

Who was she kidding? Of course her armor would fit her, there was no doubt about it. After all, not matter how many years pass, how many times the spirit gets inherited and no matter who inherits it, one thing was for sure:

She was Alextrassa, mother of all dragons, and she was more than willing to prove that fact to the world…
