Chasing Amy (1997) ✦ Reaction & Review ✦ Kevin Smith, what are you doing to me?!

My journey through the View Askewniverse continues with a movie reaction to my first time watching Chasing Amy, released in 1997 and written and directed by Kevin Smith, aka Silent Bob! This movie HITS and I am really surprised by how much I love this. Ben Affleck and Joey Lauren Adams were a dynamic pair, the writing was stellar throughout and this felt very relatable! Make sure to stick around to the end of this video for my full thoughts and review and thank you so much for watching! You dropped this at an emotional time of the month for me, I have thoughts 😜😆 I didn’t see this movie until about 3 years after it was released. As fate would have it, the timing was perfect. I was in the beginnings of a romantic relationship with a gay man. We had been coworkers and friends for almost a year before we started dating and I knew he was gay. When he asked me out I was a little confused to say the least 😆 I guess technically society would say he is bi. He has always preferred men to women sexually and romantically, so he and I just refer to him as a non-practicing homosexual or bisexual homosexual when it is necessary to explain, which isn’t very often these days. He once told my sister, after we had been together 6 or 7 years that I went from being the only woman he had ever been truly in love with, to being the only PERSON he had ever been truly in love with. All my friends back then were like “Damn! you turned him straight!!” Which of course gave me a huge ego boost in the moment and would also make me smile and laugh so hard. I would have to explain and always assure them that I DID NOT turn him straight, or even bi. That he simply fell in love with someone that happened to be of the opposite sex rather than the same sex and wanted to have a monogamous relationship with me. My family and close friends were mostly concerned with me being hurt. That he was just experimenting or going thru a phase and that eventually his attraction to men would win out over his love for me. In any relationship the possibility of your love finding new love with someone else never goes away, sexual preference doesn’t change or make that possibility any more or less likely. I would reassure my family and friends of this fact and smile, telling them that if he ever left me for a man, at least I would know what they had that I didn’t 😜 and that I would be just as hurt if he ever left me for another woman, maybe even more. As life would have it that gay guy I began a relationship with all those years ago decided I was the one that he wanted to spend his life with and I just so happened to agree that he was who I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. We just celebrated our 24th anniversary of being best friends, our 23rd anniversary of being a romantic couple, and 20 years of being legally bound to each other until DEATH!!! And he still finds men more attractive than women as a whole, and we still have that in common and enjoy checking out hot guys together 😁 Our teenage son thinks we are nuts, but also the most awesome example of what a good long term relationship/marriage should be. I am straight, so I cannot speak about if this movie is good or bad in terms or representation for the LGTBQ+ community, but I can say when it comes to exploring “alternative” lifestyles, relationships, & how people perceive and experience them, for me anyway, this movie hits a home run. I don’t feel as if Alyssa was turned straight by the right guy, like she says, and like my husband, she just found what she was looking for, it just happened to all be wrapped up in a dick rather than a vagina. It happens 🤷‍♀️ 😉😁 Dogma is my favorite overall movie made by Mr. Smith, but Chasing Amy is in a class by itself and will always have a special significance and place in my heart!

RE: The criticism, two quick things… First, Alyssa isn’t “turned straight.” She’s very clear about what led her to date women and why she decides to date Holden. When “finger cuffs” is revealed, we realize Alyssa’s path has never been straight, if you will — something else she tells us outright. Do we think for a moment the women Alyssa dated in the city, or knew in her lesbian friend circle, knew about finger cuffs? Would that have been something she rushed to tell them? Or did she let those women believe, as Holden wanted to believe, they were the only one(s) she ever found special? Second, a LOT of movie viewers these days have (willful?) trouble understanding the difference between depiction and endorsement. This movie does not endorse Holden’s actions at all, ever. As that one reviewer said, Holden is wrong at every turn and the characters around him — Banky, Alyssa, Hooper — tell him the truth about himself every step of the way. It also seems impossible for some people to grasp Holden could be the limited, inexperienced, ignorant little boy he is…and be perfect for Alyssa, or at least the Alyssa he meets when he meets her. Think of how safe and steady Alyssa might find Holden’s devotion to her to be, for example. CHASING AMY doesn’t need Kevin Smith or anyone else to make excuses for it. It’s one of the best films of the 90s and one of the best romantic comedies of the last 40 years.
