The difference of my makeup when I start watching this movie compared to when the credits roll is HILARIOUS LOL. My makeup had no chance of making it through this movie unharmed.

Please enjoy my reaction to Saving Private Ryan! Now I finally know why so many people always want this one and I have finally satisfied my own curiosity that I've had for so many years. This post is being scheduled for around the time that YouTube tells me that HD processing will be completed.

Looking forward to reading your comments!

Thanks for watching and for being here. ✌️

Definietly one of the greatest WWII films

Curaitis

Masterpiece and after Schindlers List probably Spielberg´s second best movie, although its a bit to patriotic from time to time but i guess thats the price you pay for making a War Movie in the US. Thanks for this Kai.

William

I've always considered this among the least jingoistic modern war films out there, regardless of where it was produced.

Hey Kaiielle! I'm glad the film moved you as deeply as it moved me. I think there might be better 'war stories' out there, but I think Saving Private Ryan is the best 'war film' to date because it examines a part of war only a film can highlight (maybe in the future we'll get holodecks where we experience war in VR, but I'm not sure people will want to). The authenticity of the effects and acting (and resulting immersive experience) will ensure SPR remains a classic for as long as film is a relevant medium. As for historical accuracy: 1. The Sole Survivor Policy (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sole_Survivor_Policy) remains a real thing, but how and when it is applied (how many siblings, wartime/peacetime, type of job within the armed forces, etc) is variable. It is unlikely a squad would be sent out in SPR style, even back in WWII. A message would probably have been sent through the command hierarchy to contact James Francis Ryan. 2. The Niland brothers (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niland_brothers) and the Sullivan brothers (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sullivan_brothers) were the inspiration for the Ryan brothers. The Sullivans were even mentioned by Bryan Cranston's character before the letter-reading scene. 3. SPR is not completely accurate about which US Army units fought where on Omaha Beach, which boats carried them on to the beach, how the real Omaha Beach looked, etc, BUT in my opinion, these inaccuracies do not detract significantly from the film's authenticity (which is the main point of SPR). 4. The Omaha Beach landings were real, but the final Battle of Ramelle is fictional. I just consider Ramelle to be a composite battle of real situations the US Army found itself in during WWII. Maybe the film will stoke your curiosity about WWII history (especially Canadian WWII history). Or not. The experiences of the men and women who served in WWII, however, is something you definitely should take away from SPR. Thanks for the reaction!

Glad you 'enjoyed' Saving Private Ryan! Usually, the two recommendations I make based on a positive SPR experience are 1) Schindler's List (1993) and 2) Band of Brothers (TV series). Schindler's List feels like a requirement to me though, so I hope it wins a poll here some day (if you haven't seen it).

Alex Park

There's always the philosophical debate about whether an 'anti-war' or 'non-patriotic' war movie can be made, but I agree SPR is pretty non-jingoistic. I think it tries to honor the people who fought without getting into why the countries were fighting in a believable way.

I am pretty sure that I said somewhere in this reaction that I watched Schindler's List for the first time in 11th Grade as part of our curriculum and have watched it many times since, but if I didn't then that means I only said it in my recorded review that will go in the edited version. Forgive me for not remembering exactly. Band of Brothers is a TV series that I want to do on my channel at some point in the future so that one probably won't be on a poll as it'll be an elected choice.

Thanks for the information Alex! Like I said, I know what you kind of "need to know" about World War II, the stuff that everyone on the planet should hopefully know. The stuff I don't know is more along the lines of the specific stuff about what happened at specific locations. I haven't dived too much into that often enough to remember.

Alex Park

No problem. I think you must have mentioned Schindler’s List in your recorded review. Glad you’ve seen it. (Spielberg apparently considers Schindler’s List a dedication for his mother, and SPR for his father.) I’ll check out your YouTube version when it comes out! And I understand about BoB. No rush.

kaiielle

Sorry about that! Schindler's List is fantastic. And very glad that we had to watch it in Social Studies class. We were doing a whole curriculum on World War II and that was our final to-do was to watch the film. I still vividly remember my teacher sobbing quietly in the back corner of the room.

Just had the opportunity to watch. If I heard you right, people have criticized the historical accuracy? While the plot may be fictional this movie has been praised for its disturbingly accurate depiction of war. I saw this with my dad. I can count on less than 10 fingers the movies we watched together. He’s a Vietnam vet & this one got to him. His mother did send a letter to her congressman about her sons who were drafted in the war. 2 were stationed someplace safe because of her appeal. My dad lost his hearing in his left ear. He was an interrogator in Vietnam. When he would drink Imwould get stories of how you really interrogate someone compared to the movies. I won’t share the details. I have an uncle who wanted to be a priest but was drafted. He did not become a priest after leaving the wat in Vietnam. I’ve never been to war but have seen those who survived it. I wish it on no one. I think your reaction was spot on for what you were seeing. I hope none of us, your community, all of us, never hav ego witness it in person.

kaiielle

I hope I said it properly in the reaction (if not, then I'll make sure to add some clarification) but what I meant was that people have said the back half of the movie is not historically accurate. The opening scene on the beach is VERY historically accurate though and very realistic to what it looked, felt, and sounded like. I'm sure this movie would greatly impact anyone who had been involved in war before. Big thanks and respect to your father and uncle for what they did. I don't wish war on anyone either, it's heartbreaking. Thanks for watching Bryan!
