Over the last decade milk has become a bit controversial. Some people say it’s a necessary and nutritious food, vital for healthy bones, but others say it can cause cancer and lead to an early death.  So who is right? And why are we drinking it anyway?

Science Mom

Thanks for a great video. I hadn't heard about efforts to make "lab milk." I'm curious to see how that pans out.

1:32 "Evolutionary advantage" for a gene that only exists in less than 40% of the world population, but can be found in most of the white population. 6:08 "Especially in regions where people struggle to get enough calories" - everyone is black. Your racial prejudice is showing, Kurzgesagt. --- EDIT: Let me explain a bit why these are bad. 1. Applying the idea of evolution to human history dismisses all the horrible things that have been done by humans, e.g. wars, genocides, and mass enslavement, as "natural". Also, talking about evolution on the scale of ten thousand years is, scientifically speaking, controversial at best. This is not "just science", people. 2. It's not ok to talk about something bad in general, and just use black people in the graphics. It promotes implicit bias. Simple rules to follow: 1. Don't apply evolution to human history. It's ideologically dangerous and scientifically inaccurate. 2. Avoid using black people to depict bad things. For Kurzgesagt, it's even easier - just use birds instead.

The evolutionary advantage in this case was inherently regional, developing independently in different areas of the world. Shown are the colder climates where food became scarce with the seasons and milk filled in. A case-specific evolutionary advantage does not equate to universally better, pretty much by definition.

Thanks for the great video, guys! I sincerely appreciate that you didn't tip toe around the animal suffering problems of drinking milk. Almost makes up for the wishy washy moral stand in the meat eating video.

I like the simple comparison of alternate milks. I finally know how bad almond milk is relative to cow milk.

I have been frustrated with pretty bad acne for a while now and I drink skim milk every day so thank you Kurzgesagt, now I know

JJ

This was very educational. Especially on how humans got into diary so much and what it means today. As well as touching on the other alternatives of milk.

Oh my gosh they made a platypus. I knew they had taste.

Loved this episode, as always

Nice video, but why are there bones in the background?

Thorben Menne

Thanks for putting in a comparison to plant based milk. Very nice video

Hi, do we know what kind of substance is fermented by the gene modified bacteria in case of lab milk? also is there any information what kind of startups are those who are dealing with that? thanks a lot.
