Waiting for Ant video part 2!!!

DrWex

That's a deeply messed up cosmology. Also, it has the built-in assumption that there are finite number of humans in all of time. Also disturbing.

Anonymous

Simply amazing. I'm an agnostic, but this video helps one to think on the emotional side of the big question.

Anonymous

That was pleasantly beautiful, thank you.

Anonymous

I think the story is great, I'm a huge fan of Andy Weir. The video is surely beautiful. But I strongly disagree with mixing fiction in this channel, could be done separately.

Bill Kerr

Wow. Different. I would recommend a title screen at the beginning. Viewers are likely to be confused at first. I certainly was not expecting fiction from Kurzgesagt. I think it will cost you subscriptions.

Anonymous

That was great

Anonymous

Hope that you will not stopp the sience videos, but nice Story telling.

Anonymous

I don't think I've ever been disappointed with a Kurzgesagt video before. Animation was beautiful as ever, but really not here for stories. Was this instead of a normal video? Guess there's a version of me who whines on the internet hey?

Anonymous

That was magnificent storytelling. Some beautiful thoughts.

James Dominguez

I've always loved this story since I first read it, and it's lovely to see it animated so beautifully. Thanks for this! :)

Anonymous

Please stay off religion - many of use have to deal with religious rubbish all the time. I've been a very long time supporter of yours and will continue to be, however there is more than enough wonder and awe in the real universe with no need for fairy stories.

Anonymous

Would've appreciated a note of this being fiction instead of the scientific rigor in most other videos, An excellent video, but getting an amazing Pho from a Taco truck would be unsettling.

Reno

Ah, so if it was 2 years in the making, I helped.. a bit. I feel, shamelessly, a little proud of this video. I'm agnostic, and to me most religions seem to grasp at the unknowable. But sometimes you find little gems that are beautiful in their own way. It was a pleasant surprise to find a short work of philosophical fiction on your channel. A little break from hard facts. I'm very happy you didn't invite morality to spoil the atmosphere. A couple of times it wasn't obvious which character was speaking, but the rest was perfect. Thanks for making this, as well as every other video. Now where's the next video about the immune system... 😉

Anonymous

Unbelievably awesome! <3

Anonymous

Weird. With a strong moral, albeit something naive, assertion of a universal human uniqueness. The very optimistic view of a future; that just might come to be the truth. Question; do you see such a potential future as something perfect? It sounds scary to me.

RoseAnne

That's a "nope" from me. Stick to reality please - it's so so so much more awesome and interesting. This is just a bit of philosophical silliness compared to how we REALLY are "reincarnated".

tinguu

I remember reading this story for the first time in college. Hearing it retold and reimagined felt transcendental— very much like the narrative itself. It’s disappointing to me that many people here are unable to understand the real intention or meaning behind it (empathy, humanity, and “oneness”). It is clear to me that is your intention in your other videos. Hopefully you’re team is able to develop more videos like this one that are able to bridge that gap. Great video.

Anonymous

I'm growing tired of this Jony Ive soundlike voice actah. Interesting story.

Anonymous

Lovely. Now I'll listen to the song "My Past Lives" by Too Much Joy with a different perspective.

Anonymous

I find myself in the same situation. First time I've ever given a Kurtsgesagt video a thumbs down. I do hope this is not a sign of things to come.

Anonymous

Sorry Ting, but if true this story would be horrific. That some form of yourself will experience the pain of ALL humans throughout time! And you have no relief as you just get sent back again and again. I would not look kindly at any being that would reincarnate me in the 1500's with all the disease, grinding poverty and ignorance of the time.

Anonymous

Not sure how this is consistent with optimistic nihilism. In any case, please leave mysticism to the channels whose subscribers expect it.

Thorben Menne

Beautifully animated as always and I can't say I don't like the story. BUT it's just not the right content for this channel, sorry.

Anonymous

Honestly, I really liked this video. It is different from past videos, as it isn't tied up with facts or tangible truth, but an interesting concept nonetheless. Reading through the comments, I'm actually quite shocked by some posts. Yes, this can be seen as "fiction", but there is really no way for us to prove anything here. In my opinion, this is just as factual as heaven and hell are themselves, we have no idea if they actually exist or not, and though it's fun to be religious, there are no real answers in any book at all. This video was fun and refreshing, though none of it can be proven, it's a wonderful animation on a possible theory of death in whole. Keep up the good work!!!!

Anonymous

Honestly, this theory is just as factual as your knowledge of reincarnation, neither can be proven, but it is fun to theorize what it'd be like.

Team Saunders

Like other posters I’m an atheist and like other posters I wasn’t expecting this and wasn’t sure at first whether I liked it. But the whole point of kurzgesagt (as I see it) is to make us think in a more open and balanced way. This includes religion and society. I watched this with my children and I honestly thought about pausing it as we have worked hard to give them an education where they don’t need a made up story to provide justification for being honest or morale. But then, it occurred to me, that talking this through with them allowed us to discuss why a religion might be necessary for some people in order to treat others with respect or compassion or to realise that we are all equal irrespective of colour or sex or religion. My only minor criticism is that normally with Kurzgesagt I can leave them to do the explaining whereas this one required parental intervention to do the so what at the end!

Anonymous

I have a story of my own. For years my family and I watched kurzgesagt videos and were impressed by the scientific content and rigor used to validate the material. Earlier this year, to help fund in a small way the excellent content, my family became patreons. We woke up this morning with excitement to see a new video posted and watched it right away. Afterwards, with a look of disappointment on everyone’s faces, we wondered what happened to the great fact-based science that was replaced with this fairy tale...if this is the scheme of things to come then it will be one more great channel that became corrupted with personal believes vs. educational science. We will remain patreons for now in hopes the creators will no longer do such moronic deviations from educational science.

Anonymous

Amazingly beautiful video. And the music it's just perfect.

Anonymous

Stunning animation and direction as always, and I love The Egg, I remember reading it years ago, for some reason never made the connection that he was the author of The Martian until now. Great to see it come to life with such vibrant colour and music and I can't wait to see more content like this! I do feel however that you need to keep this distinct from the regular content. Either on a sister channel or with a different voice actor. As a small criticism, the voice acting for the two characters is too similar and I had trouble keeping up with who was saying what, even with the animation cues, and also knowing the story already. Which is a shame really because it detracts from an otherwise incredible video and story. So yeah, different actor and possibly a 2nd channel and this would be 10/10. Thank you for what you guys do, keep it up and love your work. To pieces!!

Anonymous

Beautiful guys, thanks for creating great stuff

Anonymous

I cried after watching this. Amazing.

Anonymous

A weirdly anthropocentric view of the universe. As beautifully animated as it was, its not the sort of thing I'd expect from Kurzgesagt. Always excited to see a new video, I became increasingly disappointed when I realised this was turning out to be a wishy-washy self-indulgent piece.

Anonymous

Seriously considering canceling my contribution after watching this content. The context of this channel is science, not mysticism. With that in mind, it would be a real shame for people to believe this fiction is actually factual.

Anonymous

Indeed, and contributors. Just canceled my contribution.

Anonymous

Just so you're aware, Kurzgesagt. Because of this video I have reduced my Patreon contribution by half. I want to support a channel that is focused on science, empirical evidence with some thought-provoking philosophy, not mysticism and spiritual rubbish. My suggestion here would be to have this type of content on a different channel.

Anonymous

This video blew my mind! Loved it!

Mary Severinghaus

After watching this video on religion, I will no longer support Kurzgesagt via Patreon contributions. I am astonished that your team does not understand that science and religion have nothing to do with each other, and that it's science denial cloaked in religion that is responsible for the issues we have today with anti-vaccination people, climate change deniers, and proponents of alternative "medicine".

Anonymous

I am not a creative person. I rarely think of "new-ness" on my own. I can appreciate someone else's "different" and "artistic" flight of fancy, even if it doesn't fully resonate with my "scientific" reading and understanding. I never heard of or read "The Egg" before this video, and it's not going to become my new religion, but thank you for exposing me to it - something new and different - and nudging my brain, even only for 7-ish minutes, into a never-thought-of-before direction.

Brillo

Honestly I don’t get the people that are like “oh this is fiction I will no longer be a patron for you guys because of this.” It’s literally just a cool and interesting story to tell! They aren’t trying to present this as truth in any way. Like damn they didn’t want your contributions anyway if you think like that. Your loss honestly!

Anonymous

Dear patreon team, don't listen to people who confuse "religion" with "philosophy". The video is amazing and fits into the channel very well. We need thought-provoking videos like this.

Anonymous

As I commented on YouTube - WOW! I don't visit Patreon too often, so I had no idea this was coming... When I saw the title, I thought "Hmmm, that video has the same title as my favorite short story, but no-one ever heard about that, it can't possibly..." Wow. Wow. Thank you. Sincerely, thank you. I still can't believe you made this video. I love you all.

Anonymous

As an open source religion, this is a great story, hell, it might even be close to the truth - but yes, not your market. You should keep it on a different Channel. Nice work though.

Anonymous

To be fair, many signed up as patrons to support the fantastic scientific content and educational info. While this video was entertaining, artistic, and beautiful, it does not match the content that some, including myself, had intended to sponsor.

Anonymous

That does not make sense. This video has nothing to do about anti-vaccination people, climate change deniers, and proponents of alternative "medicine". It's a rendition of a short story by Andy Weir. However, even though my religious views differ from that story (I'm a MWI immortal), I'll gladly double my support because of fundamentalists, whatever your belief may be.

Anonymous

Hot damn. I've loved this story ever since I first read it a long time ago, and you've portrayed it with all of the beautiful animation I've seen so much from you all. Thank you.

Anonymous

My view, try out new ideas by all means but keep them separate and experimental.

Anonymous

I'd never heard of this story before, and I thank the channel for educating me about it. I really enjoyed the idea of it.

Anonymous

Also: Man, I've met some versions of me that have been real dickheads!

Anonymous

I loved the video and the story is amazing. Although 2 voice actors could've been better.

Anonymous

So proud of me ❤️

Anonymous

Thank you, this is one of my favorite short stories! I like to think this is the "religion" that could save humanity :)

Anonymous

First three minutes, I was like "what is that crazy new age shit doing on Kurzgesagt?". But reaching the end, I was like 😭 Sure, Kurzgesagt doing fiction videos might surprise and maybe there should be some kind of warning. But as an atheist, I was not shocked by it. In my opinion it's less about religion than a metaphorical tale about parenthood and what we want to pass to our children. As a father of a four-months-old, I find it very reliable.

Ignacio Miranda Saldívar

Since this channel it's full of people that only watch not-so-raw knowledge, this kind of videos probably may seem a little upsetting. I think it's great you do it (and keep going, it's indeed beautiful) and I think it's great you start this in the main channel. But as other said before, think about opening another channel for this kind of content. Thank you for all your job!

Anonymous

I seriously don't understand what this video is doing on this channel. Kurzgesagt has always positioned itself as a scientific, evidence-based, non-dogmatic platform, for which it the objectivity of its content is essential. And I love it for that reason! However, I did not become a fan & patreon to support theism, animism, mysticism, spirituality or other fiction and neither do I want to have my name and money associated with it. There are plenty of other channels for people interested in those topics. I will put my (little) monthly contribution on hold until I'm convinced again that my money will be used for a goal that I personally support.

Zragon

Loved the video and I'd love to see more, but perhaps make a 'not science' type channel for more spiritual things?

Anonymous

That's awkward :) Actually I did like and enjoy the video. And in general - visualiziny great fiction stories could be a great contribution... But for the first few minutes I 2as a little bit shocked, disappointed and even a bit angry. And I do understand why so many people got disappointed. Because you should have made a better emphasis that it is not yet another scientific video. Best - make another channel. Like "Kurzgesagt fiction", or "Kurzgesagt stories". If not - please indicate clearly in the beginning, that it is a fantasy/fiction. So that nobody would expect some factial-analytical-logical approach. A disclaimer at least. Like in "Positive Nihilism" (really love that video), when your indicated that here facts are finished, going on with some fantasies. P.S.: I did like the story. I do believe that fiction, and even spiritual stories - can be very useful. But please please don't mix it with scientific content.

Thomas Boys

I feel sad that people are cancelling their Patreons after one video. For years, Kurzgesagt has produced high quality science videos and the occasional philosophical video such as Optimistic Nihilism. They have proved themselves a thousand times over. This video was something different, an experiment, which is the absolute core of science. For some people it didn't work out - and that's absolutely okay - but having this one video doesn't invalidate all the science videos that came before, *or all of the high quality well researched science videos that will come after*. People are so quick to wield judgement these days with an "all or nothing" approach. Humans are really bad at doing "all or nothing" - we are inherently chaotic and unique creatures and our curiosity encourages us to try different things. Curiosity, like experimentation, is another key component of science. In a nutshell, don't punish Kurzgesagt for carrying out an experiment. If anyone deserves a chance to try something different, it's them.

Anonymous

I cant say how much I love this video, it bought a little tear to my eyes, keep up the good work, guys. Keeping seeking the answer and be curious

Thomas Boys

If anything, the story felt more like a philosophical one than having any religious tones. I'd be totally on board with a "Kurzgesagt Philosophy" channel. :)

Thomas Boys

Do you feel that is likely though? It does say both in the video and the description that it is based on a story by Andy Weir. Regular viewers will be very aware that it is fiction. Newcomers to the channel hopefully will have their curiosity piqued and will discover dozens and dozens of high quality science videos. Not saying its impossible that someone might take this video as literal fact but to me it seems improbable.

Thomas Boys

Is it realistic to think that after years of high quality science videos and a recently redoubled commitment to accuracy (showing sources, data, etc) that Kurzgesagt would suddenly change their future to one of philosophy and religion? I feel it's more reasonable to assume this was a one off experiment to see if people were interested in adaptations of science fiction short stories or philosophical works. :)

Anonymous

This video for some reason came in the nick of time. It alleviated a bit of my existential crisis that I'm kinda feeling. It helps because I am a bit convinced that there could be more after our deaths. Don't mind people criticizing your works. Personally, I subscribed to you for the content at first. Now I am here for the passion you have in making videos such as these.

Mary Severinghaus

Did you not notice the many references to "god" in the video? Any appeal to the supernatural is not the core of science: it undermines the very process of science.

Mary Severinghaus

Neither religion nor philosophy is science. I supported Kurzgesagt for over 2 years because of their commitment to explaining difficult scientific concepts to those who might not understand how science works. To me, bringing religious philosophy to the table as something to consider seriously in understanding the natural world has undermined Kurzgesagt's credibility.

Anonymous

This video is really amazing, I'm a Hebrew native speaker and I'd love to add Hebrew subtitles to this video, I can promise a good and accurate subtitles port, Please contact me.

Bradley Francis

I absolutely love this new content!

Olivia Appleton

I wish that y'all would stick to educational stuff instead of the pseudo-mystic weirdness

Dungeoneer

That story was really beautiful and really horrible at the same time. The art was fab though, and I loved the synth tune at the end.

Anonymous

that was a great perspective and i have watched it many times now.

flekkie

Interesting video. Never knew that Andy Weir had written this kind of things as well :-) Reading comments above me, I only want to add that I give you full artistic freedom to use your budgets for any kind of projects. Scientific or more Moralistic, it doesn't matter to me. For me its like we are you Patron in the real sense of the word, not your employer :-)

Anonymous

I really wanted to like this video, but being neither religious nor spiritual (if there's actually any real difference between the two), I was certainly put off during the first third of it. As the video progressed, it started to engage me a bit, but then the final third made me switch off again. I was hoping I'd be able to say that it was, at least, thought-provoking, but to be honest, the only thoughts it really provoked were how best to write this review. So, yes, it was beautifully done, but content-wise, I do not think this is a direction that is worthy of your talents.

Kevin

Thanks for this video. I was feeling pretty upset about something with someone, and while this video hasn't absolve that person's actions, it does help me see things in a new light. Also it reminded me to pledge back since my cat has gotten better.

Anonymous

this was terrible - i am pulling support out. a stark departure from any intellectual integrity.

AirWhale1

Loved the video.

Anonymous

I loved this video! It came at such a good time in my life! Right after watching it, I finally became a supporter. Much love to you all in Kurzgesagt! Reading the other comments however made me upset, this was a story from a writer... NOT Kurzgesagt! They aren’t trying to tell you what to believe in, they only beautifully animated this and made it a wonderful piece of art. They aren’t saying that this is what happens after death or anything like that,it was just an experiment and probably to try and give you another point of view (isn’t that what all of their videos do anyways?) and if you pull your support after watching this because of your opposition to whatever was wrong with this video, you’ve completely missed the meaning behind this story and made a fool of yourself. Thank you for being something I look forward to now, Kurzgesagt.

Anonymous

You’re missing the point. It’s not about leaving behind intellectualness, it was just another point of view :)

Anonymous

WOW! Thank you for taking the risk of stepping outside the normal scope of your videos and doing this - absolutely amazing stuff, and compliments for the choice of The Egg as the story!

Anonymous

Hi Kurzgesagt., I’m normally a huge fan of your content. And appreciate you trying new avenues however as I treat your videos as a trusted source I feel that you should preface this as “fiction” before the video starts or possibly call it something different as this content devalues the authenticity of your other videos.

Anonymous

As someone who's half religious and half not, I think I can understand why they wanted to share this short story. When I first read it, it really stuck with me. Religion is weird, like a cross between fantasy escapism and trying to make sense out of an otherwise random universe. The problem is, most religion can pretty easily be turned into hatred and violence, and tries to milk followers through false promises of future repayment. This story, on the other hand, for the most part just reinforces standard ethics, that things like kindness and knowledge are good in themselves rather than means to an end. And yet it also makes people feel special, it achieves that awe-inspiring feeling that the religious need so much. I don't think we can ever get rid of religion, unless we get rid of humans themselves, but like humans I believe religion can be improved, and this story is one such way to move us closer to that.

Dan Duerden (DDuerds)

I am an atheist. I felt the need to comment in support of Kurzgesagt as I do not agree with those that said they'd pull support from Kurzgesagt based on this video with the premise of "I only support what I believe in." I am a patron (not an employer), supporting a fantastic animation studio doing incredible, meaningful work that is helping the world. I don't believe every video will align exactly with my values or can adhere strictly to scientific principles. I don't love this video as much as Optimistic Nihilism, nor do I love The Egg as a short story. Just remember there's certainly much worse, poorly edited, content out there! However, I do love Kurzgesagt's work and a ton of the videos they create, as well as their thoughtful approach to the content, videos and rigor of research!

Reno

1:18-1:30 was adorable. This made me realise that animating emotional fiction is a totally different beast from your usual style of animation. There are so many segments that looked absolutely beautiful and heart-warming; something you don't get out of a black hole animation or infographic. Your explanation videos are cute and show emotion, but this took it to a whole new level. You're the best!

Anonymous

I think there's a problem with subtitles, I see only auto-generated English...

ANTIcarrot

The animation was good, but I thoroughly disliked the story on multiple levels. If you want to produce more content like this, can you please make it clearer that it's storybook time, rather than factual content?

Avid Stan

Yeah, flagged from the beginning: not just an author credit at the end.

Anonymous

Disappointing. I am not interested in videos about Hindu dogma unless peer reviewed studies are involved.

Anonymous

It's releaving to see a video about fiction at times. Science is just fine as it is but I'm not too happy with the thought of ending up being a rotting corpse in a box made of wood when I die. Looking at life in a scientific way makes it a bit meaningless. So getting fictional about the afterlife can help bringing back some magic. But I guess fantasies be fantasies and it's hard to believe it with no proof. Just going after "It jut feels like it's true" can lead to horrible blindness. Yet I'm thankful you did this and i tip my head for your courage to upload this really different video. It feels like even if you are bound to science you still wish there's more to life than physical laws and chemestry.

Anonymous

I liked this video very much - deep and also the superb quality of all your videos. Keep up the good work!

G Patreon Fan

Neat video. Curious - have you read Star Maker by Olaf Stapledon?

Anonymous

The second-person perspective sets the tone for this being fiction, and just like any fiction, the receptive viewer will suspend disbelief in order to understand the nature of the world being presented to them. Not every aspect of the Egg's universe will match up with the viewer's own world view, and that's what makes it so thought-provoking and mystifying, even in the revelations along the way. This story is a very good fit with the Kerzgesagt style.

Anonymous

A scientist and atheist, and a fan of science fiction books. Once stated that, I can only say that this was an amazing and astonishing video that really touched me, at every level. it is not going to change my visions, but it is a beautiful tale, as almost anyone can identify from the very beginning. If I already had many many reasons for supporting Kurzgesagt and the fantastic job they do with their science videos, now I have even more knowing that we will have sometimes the chances of getting this amazing fictional animated stories. Thanks Kurzgesagt!

Anonymous

if you're going to drastically depart from factual, objective, non-biased content, please state it clearly. this video is interesting and very beautiful, but rubbed me the wrong way coming from you guys.

Anonymous

Hmm I see where you're coming from but it was like a film rather than a science video, it was jarring for most of subscribers that I'm acquainted with. I think the viewers deserved a bit of disclaimer in kurz's Twitter or something. but if you put it in the film it will ruin the immersion it wants you to experience. At the end of the day I guess it's just not everyone's cup of tea and it's just mine

Anonymous

For the first couple of minutes I was a bit annoyed by this, thinking as some others have commented that this wasn't what I looked to Kurzgesagt for. But as the plot became apparent, I was (spoiler!) reminded of John Wheeler's intriguing suggestion a 1940 telephone conversation with Richard Feynman, as recounted in Feynman's Nobel lecture in 1965. The reason, said Wheeler, that all electrons look the same is because they ARE all the same - it's the same electron, zipping backwards and forwards along the timeline, a near-infinite number of times (it looks like a positron when it goes backwards in time!). See https://io9.gizmodo.com/what-if-every-electron-in-the-universe-was-all-the-same-5876966 for a fuller explanation. No matter how odd your idea, the universe has got there first!

Anonymous

I hate this video and your toxic self-rightious fan base. Sorry, I'm done.

Anonymous

^you mustve missed the point because i dont know how someone could show such negative emotion towards such an insightful and well put-together video. Keep doing what youre doing guys and gals, dont listen to the haters - you are doing a FANTASTIC job and i admire you greatly.

Anonymous

YOU GUYS SHOULD at least touch the Topic of spirituality and how it affects the world today .

Anonymous

Amazing video btw

Anonymous

I don't seek much about spirit at a science channel, but this is really good morale, pretty touching :)

Patrick W. Gilmore

I have supported you from the very beginning. I love pretty much every video you have made, up to this one. The video was well done, and I like the message. But it is not what I expected from you. Of course, there is nothing wrong with doing the unexpected. But this is more than unexpected - it is the opposite of what I expect. It not only has no basis in science of fact, it cannot be proven or disproven. Frankly, I am not sure I like that you did it. It is not that I dislike what you were trying to say, but I would have preferred your time being spent on videos about science (or the end of the universe, or ....). Don't worry, I am not removing my Patreon. Just saying I would vote against another of these. If I get a vote.

Reno

I'd personally prefer them to steer clear of morality, specifically anything where they imply that the viewer's moral position is wrong. That's the kind of content that caused me to drop creators in the past. I'm ok with fiction like this, where there is no moral conclusion. Talking about how spirituality affects the world today sounds like a minefield in that regard. 😮 Is Christianity making the world a better place? Is it making it worse? In whose opinion is it worse? 🧐 Are they implying that our views on morality are making the world a worse place?

johannes

awesome story by Andy Weir

Poker Chen

I like the fact that your team are happy to make these stories come to life, since I enjoy sci-fi very much. Thus I'm happy to support this kind of content too. However as other people have commented, branding is an important thing. I don't believe that Kurzgesagt is completely neutral - and you're not selling yourselves as dedicated rationalists either, - but it would be wiser to run a second YT channel. Alternatively, create a different opening sequence!

I can't imagine how scary it is down there.
