Here's a little resource video about this month’s challenge, which was on gesture sketches! In this video, I do a quick review of the artwork posted in the discord, walk you through my process for creating the artwork for this challenge, and discuss common mistakes and tips for making sketches like these in the future!

I hope you find it helpful ❤ And thank you to everyone who participated in this challenge! If you haven't posted yours yet, head on over to the monthly-challenges channel in the discord server and share your art with us ~ I'd love to see what you made!

Thanks so much Loish, it’s really fun to watch you tackle the same sketches as we did. I want to ask about the “additional shapes” you added around 10:30mins into the video, is there a specific logic to what shapes to add? Some look like shadows-ish, a see a lot of kneecaps… just wondering about this…

Loish

Thanks! They are just shapes that help further clarify the pose, and give more of a sense of flow to the drawings. So sometimes that’s a shadow, and sometimes it’s a detail of the anatomy. But they’re mainly intended to just elevate these sketches beyond the rough stage and refine them a little further.

Loish—thank you! I remember sketching quick gesture poses based on our live models that were not more than 2-5 minutes long. This was during junior college life-drawing classes. The more poses we did (all on the same sheet of newsprint/often with vine charcoal) the better /more accurate they became. Your gesture sketches are a reminder of how beautifully movement can be conveyed!
