It's time for this month's tutorial! This one is on the common mistakes that artists make when drawing poses. It features a few paint-overs, and I want to once again thank the patrons that sent in their artwork for me to use in this tutorial! Thank you so much for being so generous with your work and allowing me to use your work for this video.

As always, here's a cheat sheet with the most essential information about this tutorial. There's also a PDF version with clickable links at the bottom of this post.

Here are some additional tutorials that you might find helpful for drawing poses:

  • CONSTRUCTING A POSE: This tutorial shows you which basic shapes I use to construct a pose, as well as tips for making your pose more interesting and dynamic.
  • OVERLAPPING SHAPES & FORESHORTENING: This tutorial runs you through how I use overlapping shapes to create foreshortening and perspective in poses.
  • DRAWING DIFFERENT BODY TYPES: This tutorial talks about ways to vary the basic shapes to create different body types.

A special thanks to Michele Weihrich, Danny Lee, Kat Craig, Alyc Helms, and Vanessa, whose art is featured in this tutorial!

The subtitled version is coming right up after this post✨

This is super helpful! I love the idea of elongating elements to really accentuate them. Off to grab my iPad and play!

Wonderfully explained as always. I feel like I teached my eye a little to see the changes that I would make and hope that I can use it as well on my own drawings. Thank you also for the artists submitting their wonderful work, it was so helpful to see Loish making changes to other artstyles as well. ❤️

Thanks so much for using my witch lady! The paint-over pose reads so much nicer! And yes, honestly I would totally wear her outfit in real life as well. Super cozy. If I find a kimono thing like that somewhere I'll let you know :)

Thanks Loish, this was really helpful! Teachers I've listened to always talk about the importance of making the gesture drawing first but it's never really very clear to me how the gesture gets translated into body parts or outlines. It was a super interesting video!
