It’s time for this month’s tutorial! Some of you requested a tutorial on drawing cityscapes, architecture and urban environments. So I put together this resource, which breaks down the process of drawing an urban speedpaint into 4 basic steps, to avoid overwhelm and make the process more simple and intuitive! The process is in photoshop, but it can be identically replicated in procreate, because I don’t use the gradient tool.

I discuss my procreate process a bit in this tutorial, but if you want to see a collection of procreate timpelapses showing similar subject matter, you can find that here!

Here’s the cheat sheet, and if you want to download it as a PDF file, you can find it attached below:

Some of the brushes I mention in this tutorial are:

Here is the reference image I used:

And here are some other reference images I found that would be great to try this workflow on as well:

I hope you enjoy this one! Go out there and paint some street scenes ~ I’d love to see them!

Great breakdown. I've always struggled with urban stuff. I always tried to just jump in and capture the details at step 1. It seems obvious now, that a layered approach will definitely help. Thanks!

Great Tutorial, Loish. Thanks for breaking things down in digestible chunks.

Very, very useful I struggle a lot with urban stuff, I'm motivated again to work on that with your tuto. On the other hand, sorry I can't find the pdf. I'm sure it's me who can't find it. While he is surely somewhere ^^

You are amazing! Thank you SO MUCH Loish! I was among the people who asked for a urban tutorial and I'm so glad you took it into account and created it for us. That was super helpful !!!

Another wonderful tutorial, Loish. TY!

Loish

i'm glad you liked it!! and thanks so much for taking the time to request tutorials, i get a lot of motivation from hearing what people want to see.

Loish

ohh thanks for pointing that out! it's the second time i've forgotten to attach it! it should be there now.

This is so helpful Lois.. and I love how you made it Procreate friendly since we can do this on location. Getting a polished stylized street scene has been something I've had challenges with so these skills will make it fun to practice!

Very clear thank you!

Hi Loish, a question about the subtitles. The Patreon video player has the subtitles setting off, but still the subtitles are shown. Can we actually turn them off? I feel like they're in your default video. I don't know how to hide them as they sometimes distract me from what you are doing.

Brilliant tutorial, I’ve always struggled with buildings and urban settings, this workflow is so accessible, thank you!

Loish

hey! yes they are in the default video. I used to post two videos each time, one with and without, but i decided to just post them with subtitles for now. you can watch the vimeo version here - https://www.patreon.com/posts/update-subtitled-72727898 (be sure to type in the password at the top) - and turn off the subtitles in the vimeo player! sorry about that, the patreon player has really limited functionality.

I finally was able to give this a watch! Thank you so much for putting this together, I always felt like cityscapes were so daunting, but seeing it broken down this way really helps!

Nicely done. Thanks!

This was great. Thank you!

That was very helpful, thank you! Did a lot of calming and make in organized in the head. So it went from "omg how the hack I'm gonna do that?" to "oh, ok, can work" :D

You do such a great job of simplifying the process into digestible chunks. I know you make it look a lot easier than it is...but it makes me feel like I can do it. Thanks for another great tutorial.

Loish

thanks so much jason! that's exactly the idea - once you try it out and have some sense of how to tackle it, you will learn and improve so much!

I just finished working my way through the tutorial last night…(it took me a while pausing and painting along as I went!) I really learned a lot about using layers more effectively, locking and adjusting as I went, using the blur to simulate gradients in procreate, and keeping things less uniform in general. There were a lot of things you’ve covered in other tutorials that finally clicked for me as I worked my way through this one. You rock! Thanks again.

Loish

so happy to hear that jason! thanks so much for your kind comment!

I really enjoy watching your tutorials and hearing how you are thinking while approaching things, and also get a better understanding of why you are doing something a certain way. I also love your looseness (is that a word?)!

Nice tutorial. Helped me not get overwhelmed with perspective and stuff. It was great to practice these tips with one of the references and I feel that I can bring more aliveness to these urban scenes if I don't get hung up on details.
