Here it is: this month’s tutorial! It’s on environment essentials. I already have two environment tutorials, but this one is specifically designed for those of you who don’t know where to start and find environments intimidating. It breaks the process down into the most basic steps, and talks about which aspects you should primarily focus on so you don’t get lost in all of the details!

Here’s the reference image I used in case you’d like to try the same process:

And here is the final result of my demo:

As always, there’s a cheat sheet! It’s below, and if you’d like a PDF version, you can download that at the bottom of this post:

The brushes I use most in this tutorial are from Wes Gardner’s brush pack 2020, which you can find here: http://cbr.sh/kfv7sa?ref=loish

And here are the links to my other two environment tutorials:

Hope you enjoy! Subtitled version is coming up in a minute!

OMG! I finish the art and I love my work! Whenever try to learn something that scares me I quit half way and don't look back because its not appearing how i imagine or what I see in the video. But with your tutorial, I've learned to understand and follow the core steps. Thank you so much for teaching us how to start painting environment art! I'm feeling a bit more confident to draw more environment art and draw regularly. Can't wait to see what you would teach us next. Great teacher!

Thank you so much for this demo. I have Procreate so have to find a way to work with that but maybe I have to learn photoshop as well.

Nice timing Loish! I was just thinking that I should make at least one environment illustration each month. It's so out of my comfort zone, but you always make it so simple through your tutorials that even I can do it.

Oh thank you! I was just talking to another artist about being a little scared/intimidated of drawing environments! But definitely something I want to get good at drawing, thanks!!

Finally got a chance to watch this! And this is perfect timing, it'll be really useful for the January challenge, and hopefully, push me to create more environments this year overall. Thank you so much!

Thank you for putting so much thought into your tutorials and for the cheat sheets too. I love having a small note card (or a digital equivalent of it) on my desk while painting so I have a reminder of which good habits I want to adopt - and which bad ones I really want to get rid of.
